Ahead of its time

At one hundred and twenty three years old (at the time of this review), I can’t help but appreciate (again) just how superb The Time Machine is as one of the founding books of science fiction. The irony that comes with writing about the future is how easily a book can become dated, even in a handful of years. Perhaps too many science fiction writers are choosing dates closer to the present, so when that date arrives, we know our future isn’t a world filled with people wearing self-lacing shoes and riding hover skateboards. The Time Machine is still fresh today, perhaps in part that Wells takes us to a very distant future, but mostly I’d suggest, that he was himself, a man ahead of his time.

Not what I remembered from school!

When I first read this book it was 1964; it was required reading for literature class in high school. The movie was a big hit then and I just read through only caring about the similarities between book and movie. I always wanted to go back and read the classics to gain some appreciation for what the author was trying to convey. Since then I have just rediscovered what a classic this book really is. The ironies and references to dark vs. light, good vs. evil and death vs. life. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I recommend that you read this book and for me I will read more of H.G. Dakota's books.

This is a good book for young people aged between 7 and 12, as well as those slightly older who enjoy a simple read of the classics. The story follows roughly the original and brilliant H. G. Wells story, with the exception of an additional chapter: The Golden Age of Science. The wonderful but simple illustrations added to the retold story, taking me back to my childhood when I first developed a love of books and of reading. A good introduction for young people to... The Time Machine.

I purchased this copy of "The Time Machine" because it was very affordable, and I thought the cover art was appealing. As is often the case, you get what you pay for with this product. As soon as I received the book, I noticed the cover art print job was amateur at best. It was very pixelated and appeared quite cheap. Secondly, the text was printed on each page in a very small format, and the entire text for each page fit within a rectangle maybe two thirds the actual size of the page, so that the margins were 2.5" or so around the text block in every direction. I'm guessing whomever printed this did not scale the text up to match the print size of the book. Ultimately, all of the novel's text appeared present and in the correct order, but the design and build quality of the book was amateur at best. I would recommend pursuing other options.

I don't mind saying that I am a fan of H. G. Wells. His imagination and his numerous books amaze me. I first became acquainted with the time machine from watching the movie starring Rod Taylor. The book is like the movie in many ways but is much more focused upon the future. It's hard to imagine the wells dreamed up so much in his time. He was almost prophetic. As with most books by HG Wells there's a lot to think about from how we order ourselves as a society to our beliefs about God. This is my second favorite wells book and I strongly recommend it two people who like stories about time travel.

First time I have read this book. I remember watching this movie with my Mom as a child and not liking it very much. The old adage rings true here: 'the book is better then the movie!'. It's great to see how those before us figured the future would play out. Usually a 'future' novel, at least in my experience, is placed in the 'near future' up to maybe a few thousand years ahead. Well's takes that equation and does away with it going millions of years ahead. It's a good study (or at least perspective) of where man might be by then. Good read and I encourage anyone who has seen the movie, to read the book! Haha

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Read!

This was my first reading of this classic. It'd been on my reading list for years. Mark Twain's quote about classics being "books one always means to read but never gets around to" came to mind as I was reading. I'm so glad I got around to it. Once I started it, I could not put it down. This story is astounding in that it was written in the late 1900s. I've enjoyed time travel stories for years, and now know that Mr. Wells is the father of this subgenre. I recommend this for all ages, particularly young readers.

This is the first Amazon Classic I have read. The formatting and editing were excellent, which made it an easy, pleasurable read. This has often not been the case with other classics I have read.

Sense of future not promised

The story often thrilling is under scored by a genuine fear that over takes the reader of a future that promises nothing when all human efforts is expunged by forces we have no say. Only by the most minute elements of our nature made by the Creator saves us. When all that is lost is suddenly given back do we have the sense of all we over looked in life is now seen differently. War of the Worlds is more than a thrilling story of invasion but rather an insight to ourselves.
