Simus of the Hawk has been a larger than life character, a huge man with skin dark as night. A formidable warrior under Keir, he is now challenging to become a Warlord in his own right this year.
Snowfall is a warrior-priestess, but has managed to escape the evil that has infiltrated the ranks of her fellow priests. Her mentor tasks her with working with Simus to bring peace. This is a tale of their unlikely love set against the backdrop of the sweeping vistas of the Plains people. Political intrigue, magic, and plenty of old friends give plenty of heft to this very pleasing book. Elizabeth Vaughan can do no wrong in my eyes.
We stopped in the last book, of the chronicles of warlands, in Xy, with Heath's and (I have a blank for her name suddenly...) point of views.
Lara has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, and with the help of many supporters counteracted the plans of some Lords to overthrow her and Keir, respectively as queen and overlord.
But while a golden light spear shoot to the sky from the heart of the plains, a giant flying lézard 🦎 terrified Xy. And this one is not alone.
The wyverns are back and not only happy to kill in Xy, there is a big chance they have also their sight on the plains.
The plains, where we're heading for most of the book, with Simus as pov.
He is competing for warlord position for the next season of raids.
He is still loyal to Keir's idea and planned to direct his futur army to Xy and his bordures to help guard the kingdom of any raids, and in the idea to mingle their people.
But changes are difficult to swallow for some people.
Warrior-priests and dissidents are hard plotting around the vast Plains.
I'm giving it 5 stars because I cannot put 4.5. But why 4.5 because there was some mistakes in the book that troubled me.
But at two or three moments I had to reread some passages because i felt like I missed something.
I'm still not sure to have well understood what was the sacrifice, and what and/or who it entailed.
An other exemple, Faela, second of a warlord is running from a danger in the heart of the plain (I can't explain, it's a spoiler otherwise), and the character is described as being a female warrior running away, then few lignes later, a character refer to her as a he, a male warrior... it is not the only mistakes I underlined, but it just annoyed me at that time. Devil is in the details in a book for me.
For the warlord Ultie, at the beginning he is of the snake tribe, then few chapters later, he is of the needle-rats!
Those details put me off course in my reading.
It was nonetheless a pleasure to read about those secondary characters and to rediscover them and their antics and personalities, but also to discover new ones, that are very well rooted in the story.
It was also at last very nice to read about the challenges a warrior as to go through to get a warlord position, after all Keir at the end of "warlord" book 3 is stripped of his title and consequently saw his plans to bring changes to the way of the plains, and his ambition to be warking delayed.
It also brings a light onto the warrior-priests cast and what happened in the heart of the plains with the spear of light.
New unexpected or I should say unseen changes for all the characters are brewing all around their world. Xy and the plains are not yet safe of changes and these in form of gruesome flying beats, or people curses or newly blessed by the elements...
But the futur seems nonetheless very exciting, what about new power developing for some characters, mythical yet still hidden creatures... and very frightening, with probably more and more bloodshed and treason. I feel sometimes that everybody is suspect...
I didn't expect this book to be this bloodthirsty... and to see so many characters dying... I'm not sure how I still feel about that.
But what's for certain with Mrs Vaughan, everything is possible. She is a great writer and never missed to give me an emotional fantastical ride with this series.
I can't wait to read what's she has in store for Keir, Lara, Simus, Joden...Marcus... and more. Hopefully the elements would be favorable!
This book brings new questions...
Impatient for the next.
Wardance follows the saga, giving life and continuation to one friend's effort to become War Lord. Simus has returned to the Heart of the Plains, where tradition requires all warriors to return every Spring, to challenge for the opportunity to be one of this season's 8 War Lords. His last season War Lord, Keir, has a plan! But to succeed, he needs Simus to win War Lord, gather a strong force of warriors, and back Keir in his efforts to change the path of their people.
Change, though, is never easy for some people, especially those holding power and control over many! The subtle fight for the future path of their people is expected but detested as Simus' and Keir's enemies undermine all their efforts, forcing their people to choose sides in the battle.
Just as Elizabeth wrote Warprize, Warsworn, Warlord, Warcry and Destiny's Star - the romance is tasteful and discrete, emotion being the focus of the romance instead of sex. The world building that created this series is significant and continuous throughout the books. Wardance was a terrific continuation of Keir's battle to change the warrior way with his 2nd - Simus - a huge force of determination. Danger lies in the struggle when an added element of evil beasts attack the Heart during Spring Challenge, rending horses, tents and people. Simus must overcome warrior challenges, protect the future warriors sheltering with him unexpectedly, learn to trust the powers of his lover and continue on Keir's path for their people. NO PROBLEM should have been one of Simus' tattoos...cause he's got this!
Change is here! How will Simus accept it in this Springs Challenge? Read to learn...
