Top customer reviews
As others have mentioned, it can take a little pushing and patience to put together (though I'm not sure it was as bad as others have suggested... perhaps I just lucked out?). I didn't need pliers or zip-ties. You should make sure that the tank you have has the black plastic rim around the top, because the topper stays on with two hooks that slide underneath it. My gerbil loves it, and I'm very happy with the result (no more bedding on the floor! Hooray!). The wheel, hideaway, food dish, and water bottle are all on the top floor, so she has the entire bottom of the cage to burrow. My previous wire cage had spread-out bars that hurt her feet and required additional flooring, so it was exciting to see that the wire spacing was small enough that I don't worry about her getting caught (I have an adult gerbil, though, perhaps you would be more cautious with little ones). My order was processed, shipped one day later, and arrived the very next day (it shipped from PA and I'm in DC, so that was most likely geographic luck). Overall a great buy, I would definitely recommend it.
Yes, you will probably want to zip-tie the shelves or otherwise secure them in place. Not a big deal and zip ties aren't expensive.
It fits perfectly on a 10g tank, if it isn't fitting on yours, you have a nonstandard tank.
The instructions are slightly badly phrased - the process is self-explanatory anyway - use some logic and it's not a big deal.
The shelves are wire mesh. If you want to cover them, do it. If you want platforms that aren't mesh, buy something else. I personally didn't want bendy, pee-stained, chewed-up plastic under my mice's feet.
I'm not sure why all these bad reviews are here, most of them seem to be annoyance with the manufacturer for something they had nothing to do with. Small animals sometimes pee out the side of cages, if that's an issue, why are you buying a cage instead of a bigger tank? Hamsters will fall from high shelves sometimes because in the wild, they don't climb like rats or mice will. None of these are a reason to take off stars, if your pets are not suited for a cage or cages aren't suitable for your house, educate yourself instead of blaming the manufacturer. The reviews stating animals chewed through the bars are crap. There is no way an animal would chew through these without quite a bit of work. Reviews saying the topper isn't cat-proof: why are you letting your cat climb on your small animal cage? Nothing is 100% cat proof, stop being irresponsible.
The small starter cage from the pet store was way too small, and too messy as the little guys would dig and throw the bedding all over the floor. This drove me crazy. They also chewed up the plastic ramps.
Then, we tried 2 different tall plastic bins with a piece of screen over the top. We weren't happy with that either, as we couldn't interact with the gerbils at all. They are BIG jumpers, so if we took off the screen to interact with them, they would jump straight out of the bin, and it was the tallest bin we could find!
So, this product was the solution and we are so happy with it. I found the 10 gallon fish tank at a super store for only 10 bucks. Great deal.
I agree, the little platforms are a little hard to put in, and I had to push a little to get them to work right, but still well worth the money. Mine seems very stable, and I don't feel the need for zip ties as other users have.
The small blue dish and the blue wheel are from the other cage we had. I was happy to see that the wheel would work with this cage as well.
below. Hamsters will crawl upside down on the top of this cage and then fall. If you purchase this cage you need to add
wire platforms to prevent these long falls.
I am contacting Ware manufacturing to get additional platforms for our existing cage. The cage itself is nice the way it attaches
to a standard 10 gallon tank. I just never thought that our hamster would be injured let alone killed from a fall.
One last con: Our Hamster discarded her excrement out of the bars. So I was thinking about adding a skirt to prevent this.
I honestly liked the cage it just needs two additional wire platforms.
