Warfare in the Middle Ages: The History of Medieval Military and Siege Tactics Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 38 ratings

In the time period between the fall of Rome and the spread of the Renaissance across the European continent, many of today's European nations were formed, the Catholic Church rose to great prominence, some of history's most famous wars occurred, and a social class system was instituted that lasted over 1,000 years. A lot of activity took place during a period frequently labeled derogatively as the "Dark Ages", and while that period of time is mostly referred to as the "Middle Ages" instead of the Dark Ages today, it has still retained the stigma of being a sort of lost period of time in which Western civilization made no worthwhile progress after the advances of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.

In reality, this oversimplification of the Middle Ages overlooks the progress made in the studies of sciences and philosophy, especially during the High Middle Ages. It also ignores the fact that one of the most important inventions of the last millennium was created in Germany during the Late Middle Ages, the printing press, which allowed the Renaissance to move across the continent and help position Western Europe as the wealthiest region in the world. If anything, the one aspect of the Middle Ages that has been romanticized is medieval warfare. Indeed, the Middle Ages have long sparked people's imaginations thanks to imagery of armored knights battling on horseback and armies of men trying to breach the walls of formidable castles. What is generally forgotten is that medieval warfare was constantly adapting to the times as leaders adopted new techniques and technology, and common infantry became increasingly important throughout the period.

This was an interesting take on European History. Several battles like the Battle of Hastings and Montignen were used to illustrate broad trends such as cavalry dominance giving way to infantry dominance. Great use of technological changes and simple technique changes to explain why these trends occurred. A good discussion of how Halberds gave way to Pikemen and the use of Handgonners. Also a lot of detail about lightly armed infantry such as Scottish Pike's and Gascon Javelineers. Most of the Charles River histories focus on very specific events. This was a good change of pace showing a larger view of history.

This book covers all the basics and gives a lot of information and dates on when the tactics were used, I would highly recommend this book.

Very broad overview highlighting select battles in the Middle Ages. If you already know this time period pretty well, you are not gonna learn anything new. If you are new to the subject good fluff piece to pique your interest then.

For me, an engaging book describing the advances in medieval warfare tactics/weaponry from roughly the 12th to 15th century including the effective use of shield walls by the huscarls, the ability of pikemen to stand up to cavalry charges, how longbows, crossbows, handgonnes and pole-arms revolutionized the arms race and ending with a brief account of the advent of artillery and bombards as to their ability to collapse castle walls. An intriguing if brief book with relevant pictures that caught my interest and one that I did enjoy!

A great overview that gives the basic understanding of medieval warfare and its evolution: the importance of terrain, employment of infantry and cavalry, the roles of light and heavy infantry and cavalry, and how gunpowder completely threw out the playbook. Worth the 45 minutes it takes to read.

This book is an excellent description of the weapons and tactics used during warfare of the middle ages and how wars changed over the ensuing years. I expected the book to be longer.

An interesting insight into the evolution of warfare and effects on society as sieges contributed to the development of castes.
