" ...it is as complete a guide to the hobby of wargaming as you can currently get. If you have a friend or relative who wants to get into this hobby or has only just got into it then buy them this book for Christmas, their birthday or Easter... like having a seasoned wargamer at your elbow guiding you along the way....if you are like me a wargamer of some decades of experience then buy this book. It will remind you why you got into the hobby in the first place, bring back some very vivid memories of “the early days” and make you look at the hobby afresh. .... yes I really, really like this book and make no apologies for laying it on with a trowel! Don’t waste anymore time and get this book into your life now! (Wargamer.com)
graphic arts extravaganza is enhanced by lively and engaging text that clearly explains things with a feel for flair and a good sense of humor. ..ranks as a great addition to the pastime's lore...comprehensive and entertaining...highly recommended to both more experienced tabletop generals and beginners. (Toy Soldier and Model Figure)
I highly recommend this 519-page book to ANYONE interested in miniature wargaming. The title of The Wargaming Compendium is at least an understatement as this one volume gives the prospective gamer an insight to the beginning of this hobby that will only grow stronger with time. Also, grab this fascinating book while you can, as Wargaming Books, such as this, will sell out quickly and become a collectors editions before you know it. Get it while it's HOT. (Mataka.org)
About the Author
Henry Hyde has recently become the Editor of Miniature Wargames magazine following its merger with Battlegames. Introduced to model soldiers, Airfix kits and a toy fort when he was a small boy, he has been playing wargames ever since, his interests ranging throughout the annals of history. He also dabbles in skirmish, naval and aerial wargaming and even confesses to a lively interest in fantasy and science fiction. He has a special love of campaigns, the eighteenth century battles of Marlborough and Frederick the Great and siege warfare. An honours graduate in European History and languages from Sussex University, Henry’s interest in wargaming is firmly rooted in a passion for history. Besides writing, he is a professional graphic designer and enjoys art, photography and music. One of Henry’s greatest passions is for cooking, on which he blames his current waistline. When not frantically trying to meet deadlines, Henry fills his spare time with blogging, podcasting, tweeting and all those other modern-day activities that prevent us from truly relaxing. He even manages to play the occasional wargame. Henry lives in the beautiful county of East Sussex.

It is well written and beautiful to just thumb through and look at the the pictures.
If you are into any kind of wargaming, Ancients to SCIFI, Napoleonics to WWZ, this book is a great addition to your library, and I think you will find yourself coming back to it for a long time to come.
I downloaded this book this morning and then spent next too hours browsing from cover to cover.
Photos are great, writing is interesting and well put together, loved the history, the games ideas and the contact info at end. Also liked the way on kindle on my iPad I could connect to the various web sites.
This book strikes me as a labour of love from someone who enjoys their hobby.
Worth every cent for Kindle edition (pictures come out well on iPad) and miniature war gamers would enjoy the hard copy.
...but it doesn't stop there! Not content to just TALK about the hobby, the book encourages the reader to give it a try by devoting chapters to miniature painting, terrain creation, and no less than THREE separate sets of rules for various eras, all written in a style that is simple, but doesn't insult the reader's intelligence.
Seriously, if you are interested in the miniature wargaming hobby, BUY THIS BOOK. If it doesn't inspire you to give it a try, your soul fell out somewhere...
if you're thinking about jumping into miniature wargaming, there's a wealth of information to help get you started and lovely images to whet your appetite; if you've been in the hobby for years, there's a good deal in the Compendium for you, too!
I'm glad to have this book on my shelf!
Mr. Hyde starts with a history of his undertaking into the hobby then moves in to descriptions of the myriad of games types and equipment that one acquires to play the games. A set of Napoleonic style of rules are included along with a sample replay so as to better illustrate what should take place.
One of the positions he takes which peaked my interest was that he never found much panache in the naval wargaming sector. Grey ships on a Grey sea just doesn't garner any excitement. I would recommend this book to the beginner or the grognard type who wants a more simple type of game. This is not intended for the FOW tournament player or the Challenger Modern MBT guy.
My only complaint is that the pages are not numbered in the Kindle version so that all the PDFs of the book are unavailable for download. I only wish the password was tagged to the photo description or some such. The charts in the Kindle display get cut off so you can only see the first 70-80% before it is cut off.
