It is mostly a Wars-type game with many unique elements borrowed from Fire Emblem, Langrisser and other turn based strategy games of the genre, while introducing some of its own to keep it fresh such as property fortifications. In Wars, you had to have units on the property to defend it to prevent it from capture. In this game the properties have their own defenses that the enemy has to defeat before it could be captured, which is one of the key standouts from the others.
The gameplay is outstanding. The campaign allows you to play as the antagonists in side chapters for where it is applicable to the story. The characters have their own strengths and weaknesses for those who have played any "Wars" game where COs are present.
And am very happy with many others that the studio who developed it was able to release it on physical for the Switch.
The digital copy is nice for the price. But with SD card space at a massive premium with DRM BS mixed in, paying the extra cost for an actual physical copy relieves yourself of all the yelling and screaming when tech fails to work. Also, it saves SD card space for other content.
The physical copy also comes with a bunch of neat extras from a map to some stickers to a double-sided game cover, in addition to a physical game manual itself. How those extras were packed with the game in the case could have been better. Due to the design of the Switch case, there is no manual/paper tab on the leftside the inner case. So your extras are not going to be too secure in the case. The manual is secure, the rest aint.
All in all, Wargroove, in physical, is must have for the Switch! You won't be disappointed!
In my opinion Wargroove isn't quite as good as the Advance Wars games but it's still a fun game to play and offers a lot of replayability. Still worth 5 stars to me. I might've payed a little more than I would have for a digital download but I prefer a physical copy and this came with a couple extra things in the box.
Last warning and some may consider mild spoilers:
The true ending will require you to master the game. And don't expect to learn tricks from online. Recent patches have made a lot of that not work.
