So what’s included with the Waring BB 190? The base unit (motor housing) has an all metal case and base, rather than what I had anticipated as a thin sheet of steel covering a plastic frame. The sticker indicates this unit is assembled in the USA. So far, so good. There are four rubber isolated feet and the drive cog has six teeth, and appears to be made of some hard rubber composite. The face contains the controls and includes two toggle switches and NOTHING. That’s it. One of the switches is for pulse mode and is spring loaded to return to the off position. The other switch is three position with off on the bottom (where god intended it to be), along with LO and HI as you pass the detents upward. You do have to actively push the switch to off, rather than have some option which does that for you. Toggle switches are widely used in commercial applications due to their robust design and long track record of reliability. The base is impressive in simplicity and design beauty. There are also three generously sized air vents on the bottom which circulates a good volume of air, keeping that motor cooler and extend the life.
There are five other parts which comprise the mixing container. The black plastic base is keyed to fit around the drive cog with little effort, and acts as a base for a black rubber seal/gasket. On top of the gasket rests the blade assembly which is made of stainless steel and is a four blade design with a bottom which mates with the drive cog on the motor unit. The ‘Copolyester’ container is extremely light and crystal clear, with measurements indicating up to 44 ounces and 5 ½ cups, on two of the sides, with the other two sides having some metric measurements I don’t understand, because I can’t speak Latin. OK.
The fifth and final component is the lid which has a smaller lid hinged to the middle. These are purportedly for adding ingredients, but in all honesty this is a feature I have never used in my life. Not once.
Now it is time to take it for a test whirl or two. Using a cup of ice and an equivalent amount of liquid, like water (wink wink), I managed to blend the contents in a matter of several seconds; as in two. Make sure the lid is fully seated, because the torque and mixing action of this blender is atomic.
Next I tried some homemade hominy to grind into dough for tortillas. Using the ‘pulse’ switch and a wooden spoon to keep the corn in contact with the blades when they stopped, I managed to make about 3 cups of masa in around 15 minutes. Sure beats a mortar and pestle or metate.
For a third experiment I milled some dent corn kernels to see if cornmeal or flour was an option with this unit. Using one cup of dry kernels and the pulse mode about six times followed by 30 seconds on HI, this blender managed to produce cornmeal consistency (using my scientific feel method). I have to admit this did surprise me; after all it’s a blender. After running the unit for another minute, and the majority of the contents had the consistency of flour. It would appear that one would want to sift the contents and return the coarse grind along with another cup of corn to make four. None the less, I’m impressed with the performance.
I would try a handful of pebbles to really test the envelope, but I like this thing and will stick with various foods. If you’re shopping for a higher performance blender with a couple switches like the ones from the 1950’s, then this may be the perfect mix (see what I did there?).
I took off one star because it's the tallest blender I've seen in awhile. I have to store the base and the blender jar separately.
If you want it sturdy, simple and strong, this one is for you.
Con, I didn't realize the measurement jar was plastic. My previous Waring blender jar was glass.
