This is a great blender, with a powerful motor that will easily crush ice. I'm actually on my second one which my wife and I use every daily to make fruit smoothies with ice and frozen fruit (I use frozen strawberries which are probably harder than ice cubes). It's dead simple to operate, with a basic toggle switch to control the motor -- high/low/off are the only options, which means no fancy digital controls to fail.
I have two criticisms of this blender, though. One, the jar isn't completely dishwasher safe. On our first blender, we found that small cracks developed in the base, which caused ever so slight leaking, after about a dozen or so trips through the dishwasher. I fixed most of that with a coating of plastic epoxy on the underside. Long-term, this made the base where the blender sits get exposed to moisture/residue and made it hard to clean. Even though the current jar is durable, glass would be truly dishwasher safe, wouldn't crack and wouldn't ever leak.
On our blender, the long-term exposure to moisture at the base I think caused its premature failure. The *motor* didn't fail, but the linkage between the drive coupling and the motor corroded, resulting in the linkage stripping and no longer being capable of blending even a pitcher of water.
My second criticism isn't that so much (although I suspect no stainless steel drive components were used) but that there was *no* documentation I could find on how to remove the top drive coupling to disassemble the base and replace the corroded parts. They even sell replacement drive coupling for the base, but I'll be darned if I could figure out how to remove it. So basically I had to toss a blender that probably could have been easily fixed.
My first one had a life span of about 6-7 years, which while not great, isn't awful considering the heavy use, and I didn't hesitate to buy another one versus the vastly more expensive and complicated VitaMix and Blendtecs.
All in all this purchase has turned out very well for me so far as this new blender does just what I ask of it, simply and quickly. Its also small enough to stay out of the way on the counter and not take up too much space. I have only had this unit a few days now but really like it so far and would buy it again. IMHO this is a manly blender that kicks tail and doesn't require a bank loan to buy. Skip the cheap machines and the really expensive ones and save yourself some trouble/$. The Waring HPB300 is a keeper in my book, with the 5yr motor warranty the clincher. Note to Waring: Make a 64oz container for this unit and I will buy it right away no questions asked. One of these days I just know I'm gonna drop that lid when I really really need it...

UPDATE: Been a couple months now, here are some additional notes: The new blender/motor smell is finally gone, took at least 2 weeks of using every day. Maybe because I don't use the high setting it took longer but no biggie really. IMPORTANT-KEEP YOUR HAND ON TOP OF THE FRICKIN BLENDER for at least the first several seconds when the ice and whatever is first being blended. I fired it up a few weeks ago and turned around to put something back in the fridge and suddenly this horrible grinding noise started. The container had "jumped" halfway off the motor base. I immediately shut the unit off but my motor and counter were full of tiny bits of rubber (also large bits of ice and fruit) and a bad burning smell filled the air. I cleaned everything up and surveyed the damage. Most of the rubber was stripped from the motor coupling but no real performance issues or damage. My own fault, a MAJOR rookie mistake. It only takes 30 seconds to blend most things so don't walk away. Tough blender however as its still working fine. I will eventually have to replace the coupling I am sure but I'm not going to fix something that works. Still give the blender a top recommendation, just be smarter than me and you'll do fine. Note to Waring....REALLY NEED that larger container now ok?
LAST UPDATE: Change up....After reading countless reviews saying this blenders containers do not last very long I am forced to agree. After 11 months of average usage my second carafe blade seal started leaking into the motor just like the first one did . I am pretty miffed at this quality problem and I am NOT going to buy a THIRD carafe for this blender. This newer carafe lasted less than 11 months and it was $60. The Waring warranty is for the motor only and I didn't think about having to buy a new container every year when I bought this. I am feeling a bit played right now. Waring... you have lost a customer and no longer get my endorsement. I now label this unit NOT RECOMMENDED due to widespread problems with its containers.
I am going back to the Vita-mix site and pick out one of their reconditioned 5200 models, as my first Vita-mix was also a recon unit and lasted many many years. With their complete 5yr warranty and proven quality I seem to have come full circle now and believe Vita-mix is the smart way to go.
