Jesse leaves to spend one year in Europe, where he's expanding his chain. Towards the end of that trip though, he gets in a horrible automobile accident. He is shattered, scarred, and in constant pain. He actually died for about five minutes, and even had to have a limb reattached When he returns home, he can't even carry his suitcase to the house from the taxi, and can even barely get around with his cane. The night he returns home, he's greeted by Keith, who is now 18, has gotten MUCH taller, and is built like a body-builder.
Jesse has just about given up on life, but Keith has always had a crush on him, and now that he's an adult, Keith pursues Jesse with conviction. Jesse never had feelings like that before for Keith. He always saw Keith as a boy to whom he was a friend. But now, Keith wants more. Over time, Keith's devotion and love gradually have their effect on Jesse, who gradually starts to move beyond his pain and near-death experience.
The characters are wonderfully rich and detailed. They are extremely well-written and very easy to empathize with. The plot moves along at a nice pace, and is clever, clear, and very very well-written. The book evokes strong emotions with a certain grace and skill that is surprising.
The only flaw is that some bizarre things happen that eventually drive the story to the realm of a paranormal or fantasy novel. As the relationship between Jesse and Keith develops, Keith.... grows. He becomes almost frighteningly huge and strong. Unbelievably huge and strong. It feels somewhat out of place because the story is so expertly written as a character-driven story with it's deep complex portrayals and rewarding character interactions, Keith's growth contrasts it as being plot-driven. Perhaps if his growth were made more subtle, it would come off as a wonderful layer of symbolism, but it seems out of place here.
It's quite a story. It does have a high level of romance, and I'm very very glad I got it. The characters are endearing (even though Keith can be a bit frightening at times), and Rowan McBride leaves me envious of his skill to write so clearly, efficiently, and gracefully, making it seem easy.
The writing sucked me so I felt like I was there; this is one of those rare books that made me want to crawl in the book and live there.
If you like hot muscle guys with an endless capacity for love, then you'll love this. Even if a muscle god to the 10th degree doesen't do it for you, the complex characters and touching love story will suck you in.
