Warn VR series winches
More pulling power without breaking the bank
The Warn VR series truck and SUV winches are Warn's entry level winches, but that just means they are small on price, not on performance. Every winch in the VR winch series is packed with exclusive Warn features, including either the standard wire rope with roller fairlead or Warn's patented Spydura synthetic rope with hawse fairlead. The durable, smooth, and always reliable three-stage planetary gear train is the industries choice for gearing while the series-wound motor gives plenty of power and fast line speed.
Of course, like all Warn winches, your going to get the legendary performance Warn is known for, whether you have a lighter truck or SUV and need the smaller and versatile VR8000, you drive a midsize truck or SUV and need the bigger power and torque of the VR10000, or you have a super heavy truck or piece of equipment that demands one of the largest winches on the market with the VR12000, Warn has you covered.
Each VR winch has Warn's exclusive brake design for superior winching control and a fully removable control pack for various different mounting options and a 12 feet rubberized and weather resistant remote control to keep you in total control while operating your VR winch and of course, every Warn VR winch is backed by the full Warn Limited Lifetime Warranty.
With the Legendary power and durable contruction of Warn's VR series winches, you never have to worry about getting caught unprepared.
With the included 12 feet rubberize remote on all Warn VR series winches, you have the power to decide where you want to control your winch.
With the power and reliability of Warn VR series winches, never get yourself in a situation where you can't pull yourself out again.
12 feet remote control
The new next-generation WARN remote control stands up to rough treatment off-road. The rubberized, ergonomic pistol-grip handle sits comfortably in the hand. It's ultra-weather/mud resistant thanks to improved sealing. Simple, intuitive operation makes for a new industry standard in winch remotes.
A completely removable control pack allows you to have controls mounted on the winch itself or somewhere completely different on your truck or SUV. The way you operate your VR winch is completely up to you.
All of the S series VR winches come with 100 feet 3/8 inches diameter Warn exclusive fully synthetic Spydura rope with a full radius matte aluminum hawse.

If you mount this winch to forward mount style bumper (most ARB bumpers are, if I'm not mistaken) you will either have to clock the winch so that the gear lever more accessible, which isn't too bad, but the motor drum will also require clocking to move the drain hole from the 3 o'clock back to the 6 o'clock position to make sure it does not fill up with water.
The winch rope is of medium quality. It has rusted more than some other ropes that I've used, but for an entry level winch, its not so bad. However I'd get the VR10000-S with the synthetic line. While there is debate as to which is sturdier and longer lasting, there is almost NO debate as too which is safer, which is something to consider if you are getting your first winch.
If you do clock the winch there is a chance that the gasket on the gear side will break allowing water to entry and rust to form. This will require you to service your winch periodically. I've serviced the winch twice (August 2013 and February 2014), each time cleaning out any buildup on the gear set, as well as applying more anti-seize to the gears to allow for smooth operation. A metal pick will be helpful for getting some of the set in gunk. You will also require some black RTV (gasket sealant) for application to the edge of the gearset housing.
While I'm a bit upset at the fact that I'm looking into a replacement at less than 2 years (I've heard many warn winches lasting 10 to 20 years!), I cannot honestly say that it hasn't done its job admirably and stood up to a TON of abuse, as it was used at least once or twice during each weekend trek and sometimes up to two dozen times! It never failed under load, which cannot be said of some of the other brands of winches I see out there. If I could give it a 3.75 I would, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it the 4 stars. I recommend the synthetic roped version of this same winch to be honest, but this is trusty all the same.
Also to note: The synthetic version is 250 dollars more, which is a bit on the high side at 830 as of this review, is also about the going rate of replacement synthetic rope. However the drums are different; the VR10000-S has a slightly bigger drum that has been reinforced to to compensate for the extra compression of the synthetic line.
I've had the winch installed for about 4 months and am disappointed with the overall quality. The winch drum has A LOT of surface rust and the finish is flaking off, after only 4 months with no actual use... The aluminum fairlead is badly pitted and oxidized, looks pretty ugly on the front of a new truck... To be fair, salt is used on winter roads in my state but I hoped the painted finish would hold up for at least a year before showing signs of significant wear. I contacted Warn to find out if this is normal and if there was anything they would do about what I'd consider poor finishing on the product and received this response:
"... The VR series of winches is really a price driven winch that we import rather than build in house. The length of time the winch will last is really impossible to estimate as there are so many variables with battery condition, amount of usage, air temperature etc… Regards, RS, WARN INDUSTRIES INC., Technical Customer Service Representative"
So basically we don't build it, we buy it from someone else and put our logo on it, you're on your own... I'd probably look at different brand, other than Warn, and spend a bit more to get something that I could expect to last were I to purchase again.
You've probably heard a million people say 'you get what you pay for' but don't let saving some cash leave you stranded. I've owned two Warn winches before and never had any problems with them. I should have stayed with them in the first place.
I haven't self recovered yet, but I've pulled another vehicle out of a ditch with ease. Once you move to synthetic, you will never want to mess with a steel cable again. It's well worth the additional cost...
