About the Author
Holly Lisle started the Cadence Drake series back in 1997, and due to circumstances beyond her control, had to wait fifteen years to bring back the first novel, HUNTING THE CORRIGAN'S BLOOD, and write the second. A third, WISHBONE, is next on her schedule after she completes the third YA fantasy, THE EMERALD SUN, in the Moon & Sun series. (Books One and Two were THE RUBY KEY and THE SILVER DOOR. This book is NOT a YA novel.

I liked the "Emergency Cookie" reference throughout the book - that added a smile to the story. I also really liked the ending with the character Herog and its future book possibilities (Man, it is hard to write a review without spoilers!).
Can't wait for the next Cadence Drake book! In the meantime, there are a lot more Holly Lisle books for me to read. ;0) She is fast becoming a favorite.
*I don't usually read vampire books because most romanticize the dark and evil, but this series doesn't. Here, Cady fights vampires to save humanity.
Once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. Not only are the characters memorable, the narrative tight and twisty, but Ms. Lisle has a real gift for subtlety. She drops hints and clues throughout the novel.
While you don't need to have read the first book to understand and love the characters in this one, you really should. It is a great book on its own and the sequel blows it out of the water.
There were many times that I was unsure how the characters would survive or even win. The solutions to their problems made sense without being obvious.
I recommend this title to anyone who loves a good story and strong, likable characters to root for. So everyone.
Like the first book in the series, Hunting the Corrigan's Blood (A Cadence Drake Novel), WARPAINT zigs and zags in ways that are startling but true to the people and the situation. Though the story's based on vampirism, it feels fresh. While reading, I got the sense that Holly Lisle was as surprised as I was by some of the things that happened and by some of the ways that the people grew, and her afterword confirms this.
Another strength of this writer is that she's not afraid to deal with important themes that pertain to our lives in our world. To succeed, the people in the story have to figure out why what they're doing is so important to them personally, and by extension to you and me personally. Now I'm pondering my own WARPAINT.
Finally, the afterword is dated December 12 and I was reading the book on December 18. Six days from the author's computer to my Kindle? I like that.
Thank you, Holly Lisle. Now I'm waiting for WISHBONE to find out what Cady does next, but... take your time. No pressure <fanged grin>.
Maybe I'll nibble a cookie while I wait.
I purchased this book because I have been a long time fan of Holly's and have yet to find something she has written to be disappointing to me. I highly recommend this author if you are into characters that make decisions that have an impact on their life, and are memorable throughout yours.
