A beautifully filmed tale set in feudal India, The Warrior tells the story of a man who must decide whether to follow the orders of his cruel boss or do the right thing and put his own life in danger. When Lafcadia realizes he can no longer kill innocent people whose only crime is being poor, he defies his warlord's orders to annihilate a village that has been unable to pay its taxes. Filmed in 2001 by director Asif Kapadia and presented by Anthony Minghella--who, like Quentin Tarantino, is fond of attaching his name to smaller films that may otherwise get overlooked--The Warrior manages to tell a violent story without depicting very much on-screen carnage. Kapadia's subtle direction shows that the viewer's imagination often is more potent than anything Hollywood can dream up. As the hunted warrior Lafcadia, Irfan Khan is a stoically heroic presence. We do not sympathize with what Lafcadia has done in the past, but we empathize with his trying to right his wrongs. --Jae-Ha Kim

The story in short shows how an executioner of the king turns around to be a shepherd of sheeps at the footsteps of the great mount Himalaya, after he has experienced a soul transformation from that of a fearless warrior to that of a broken man.
The story unfolds in a very accurate script as the time of the events occur (check the warrior's armor, my lucky guess is that he took it from a fallen crusader !!) so the story takes place mainly in a muslim world, and way of exercising justice (the king is beheading the farmer because of a poor crop)
Irfan Khan gives a noble battle, and he intends to win it no matter what the cost is, even that of the tragic loss of his only one son.
An example of the nobility of people in arms in a very rough world even that of a muslim. I recommend this film, as a character guide for a better understanding why the Crusaders lost their fight in their war-quest for the Holy city.

The only problem, in my mind, is that the experience is a bit too minimalist; the plot is a sort of thinned-down asian 'Gladiator', and I think a little more dialogue could have added a lot of depth to the characters. It's a joy to look at, though.
The movie centres around The Warrior (oddly enough!) who is the leader of a band of enforcers working for a wealthy Lord. Not knowing my history very well I'm guessing this was pretty much how it was, wealthy people were the ones with a gang of bullies that ruled with an iron hand....
Our hero has a change of heart in an encounter in the middle of a burning village that he and his men had been sent to "teach a lesson" and seeks to change his ways - that would all be fine in that you don't simply leave the Lord that easily....
Whist most of the story is peaceful, violence is kept to a minimum in the same way, as another reviewer points out, is the dialogue. This is a film about relationships - not in the girl/boy sense but almost in the vein of a road movie, various characters meeting in existing with each other.
The lead is charismatic and interesting and displays a range of emotions with little or no apparent effort, when you catch him smiling which is rare here you find yourself doing the same, you feel for the character and what he goes through.....a journey.
The score beautifully accompanies the cinematography which is also beautiful, I'm struggling for superlatives, but that's just it, this film is beautiful. Take it from me, I have a varied taste in movies, I love my Sci-Fi, Horror, World Cinema, etc but this equals the epic Asian movies; Crouching Tiger, Hero and House of Flying Daggers, not in scale or scope (although there is plenty of scale in places) but in beauty.
I watched this with my girlfriend and we were silent in appreciation pretty much through all of the credits, not a normal occurrence I can tell you!
The extras on this disk are great from what I can see, it's less than an hour since I watched it, and the commentary sounded very interesting and provided some intriguing insights into the filmmaking.
This might not inspire all of you like it did me, but I can promise you this is one stand-out movie that deserves to be far more widely appreciated...
I await more of Mr Kapadias work with great interest....
The theme is quest-for-redemption. Classic, simple, universal.
The characters are developed with a look, with a gesture. We understand perfectly, for example, the warrior's feelings towards the thief when, near the end of the film, he inches the thali towards himself teasingly.
Dialogue is (wisely, in my opinion) kept to a minimum. These are not chatty people, so why make them chat?
Visually, the movie is truly beautiful.
Most blockbusters today are very much like rides in an amusement park. The latest "Star Wars", "Lord of the Rings"... But if you are looking for an aesthetic experience, if (for example) you appreciate Satyajit Ray's films, you'll certainly like "The Warrior".
