This book takes research on the capabilities of the mind done by the military and applies it to both the military and business. The issues discussed are not new--meditation, active listening, intuition, visualization, biofeedback, martial arts, and psychokinesis, to name a few. What is unusual is to learn how much the military has been looking into these issues and to have them all in one place. Included with a discussion of each are exercises for improving individual skills, examples of how they worked in the military, and how they might help in business. Given the popularity books that adopt military strategies for business--such as Wess Roberts's best-selling Secrets of Attila the Hun (Peregrine Pub., 1985)--this work might gain a large readership.

A grounded book

This book is clear, concise, and easy to read. It delves into all of the "hidden knowledge" that the western world sees as crackpot dealings, but secretly has utilized for decades...because they recognize that other cultures and civilizations, more intune to nature, have known and used this wisdom for centuries. What I appreciate about it most is that it's humble, and makes no grandiose assertions or is filled with annoying vocabulary typical in "new age" literature. You can tell the authors are open minded yet grounded. Each of the authors have fascinating lives.

It contains many formerly secret training methods developed and used by both U.S. Army Intelligence and the CIA. A now very rare and hard-to-obtain text. Buy it if you can find one for sale.

"How to Win in Business, and in Life"

"WAGING CORPORATE WARFARE" the back cover to the paperback of this 1990 book announces. It's written by three people, the first of whom listed is Col. John Alexander, a man who "evolved from hard-core mercenary to thanatologist". He appeared on British TV last year on the show Visions of the Future to talk about the potential of nanotechnology to create weapons to blast holes in the blood vessels of enemy combatants. Next is a Maj. Richard Groller, a military intelligence officer who "exemplifies the modern day techno-shaman". Finally, there's Janet Morris, an author and, among other things, an initiate of "the Japanese art of bioenergetics, joh re".

I realised early on that this was going to be an unusual book. The reader is advised that in the age of human excellence, optimum performance is dawning. But what is optimum performance? The answer seems to be the utilisation of psychokinetics. Mind over matter. The authors cite a 1972 DIA report on the suspected abilities of Soviet psychics, and their powers of being able to mold the thoughts of key US and civilian leaders at a distance, to cause the instant death of any US official at a distance and the ability to disable all types of US military equipment. They don't say how the DIA came to make such an assessment, certainly in PSI: Psychic discoveries behind the Iron Curtain there is no mention of being able to kill using the mind, only the ability to cause temporary unconsciousness.

In addition to psychokinesis, the authors recommend influencing other people through body mirroring and matching the breathing pattern of the person to be manipulated. There is also talk of "reality mapping", which allows individuals "to use belief systems to chart a path through the universe."

The authors also mention a technique known as dim mak, the death touch, which apparently disrupts a person's chi/qi, causing death a few hours later. Col. Alexander, the authors say, studied under a kun tao karate practitioner who could kill a goat in 12-24 hours by dim makking it.

But why stop there? The authors also mention the potential for psychokinesis to wage cyber-warfare. In the chapter "SELF-TESTS: PUSHING THE ENVELOPE OF HUMAN PERFORMANCE", Col. Alexander states, "It is certainly my view that the greatest threat in the application of micro-PK is to attack computers. The systems do not need to be incapacitated; they only need to be made unreliable."

On page 102 is the comment. "For years the Western nations were perceived by the non-democratic nations as 'capitalist warmongers'". The authors don't really provide any reasons to disagree with that statement. It just seems to be the nature of the warfare that they wish to change. No mention is made of any ethical issues relating to the waging of their corporate warfare.

From an ethical standpoint, the book is a disgrace, in my opinion. However, as an insight into the development of paranormal studies behind military doors, I found it interesting.

This is an interesting book on the subject of enhancing human performance. While the book was geared toward the field of business, it has direct applications to other fields such as self-defense and martial arts. Although the title is about "psychic" techniques for performance enhancement, it is not a book of esoteric study. Instead it is a scientific study of various methods of enhancing the mind and the body through non-traditional training techniques.

While there are other books that cover some of these techniques, this is the only title I have seen that covers them in such detail. I would recommend this title to anyone interested in improving themselves. It's too bad that such a great title is out of print.
