The story of the author's life in the navy seems to have been a consolidation of the author's diary and letters home. There are several instances when he repeats a description of an aircraft or some other details.
Some of the things I thought were quite interesting were the descriptions of the aircraft and how they were used in the war. These flying boats could carry two thousand pounds of bombs and had half a dozen machine guns of various types attached to them. While they were a lacking in elegance in comparison to other period aircraft, they certainly could attack shipping quite successfully.
Another interesting aspect of the book was the personal description of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were some details mentioned here that I was not completely aware of. It was also hard to imagine such a young man being present at such a major and tragic event.
This book is told very much in the style of a fireside chat. It lacks some details in places where it would have been nice to know more. However, if you see it as an old man telling a story it is quite fascinating in places. When a book is this good it is hard not to want more.
Interesting read. Plan on letting friends who enjoy World War 2 bios know about this book!
