About the Brand
Wasa, which has a staff of around 950 people, has been owned by the Barilla Group since 1999. The head office is in Stockholm, Sweden, and the company has production facilities in Filipstad in Sweden, Celle in Germany, and Hamar in Norway.
The name Wasa has its roots in an old Swedish word, vase, which means sheaf. Since the 14th century, the coat of arms of the first king of Sweden, Gustav Vasa, and his family has featured a stylized sheaf. Gustav Vasa was sometimes called the "Rye King". No-one knows exactly where the name comes from, but it may have its origins in the fact that the king demanded that his people pay their taxes in the form of rye, a valuable commodity at the time. For many years, Wasa used a picture of the Rye King on its packaging. This was later replaced by a royal crown above the name. Today, the crown has been evolved to a crown-sheaf which represents the origins of Wasa. It also lends a royal air to crispbread, something which is also reflected in the fact that the company has been appointed purveyor to His Majesty the King of Sweden.

I've tried many other Wasa crispbreads and I always come back to this one. Nothing compares to the hearty rye. It has a very thick, satisfying crunch and a nice, bland rye flavor. I eat it with anything and everything, or even by itself. It's great if you spread butter on it and eat it with soup. Other examples: tuna fish, cheese, lunchmeat, peanut butter, ice cream, salsa verde, chocolate pudding, Wolf chili, banana slices, SPAM, etc. Be creative.
It NEVER GOES STALE, so don't worry too much about sealing up the package. I believe that's a design principle in all hardtacks (see wikipedia). In my opinion, it only gets better with age. In reality, there is negligible difference between the freshly opened package and the months-old package. Same crunch, same flavor. It's like bread, but without the possibility of mold. Oh, it's also healthy and stuff. Lots of fiber.
I highly recommend the hearty rye. Buy a few cases now to prepare for Y2012 :)
I learned about Wasa crispbread from a favorable Consumer Reports review. So, I decided to give 'em a try. The texture and "mouth feel" is like eating a hard cracker. But unlike other brands of hard crackers, the Wasa "sourdough" crispbread actually has some flavor and decent taste, with just a hint of salt. I like the slight tang of the "sourdough" rye crispbread; which is my favorite. Taste vary - but I like and recommend the Wasa "sourdough" crispbread.

I prefer the light rye over some of their other varieties - the taste is fairly plain, and not as hard and crunchy (I have sensitive teeth).

Just what I needed--crunchy but calorie smart. I don't like the taste of rye and many comparable Wasa products are made with rye flour. I was glad when I found this one.Published 4 days ago by KT
