Summer 1987: Mark Prewitt’s only priority is to avoid his dad’s new wife and waste time with his friends, but idle nights are the devil’s playground. When his friends decide to pull a cruel prank on the reclusive and strange Farrow sisters, Mark regrets caving in to peer pressure.
Wanting to make amends, Mark is drawn into the mysterious world of the Farrow girls, finding a kindred spirit in the middle sister, George. She is unlike anyone he’s ever known; a practicing witch who uses folk magic to protect her family. They bond over books, loneliness, and homemade spells. She even invites Mark to join a séance to contact her dead sister, who died under mysterious circumstances.
Keeping their relationship secret, Mark learns that living a double life in a town this small is impossible. When the secret is exposed, and his friends plot to punish the witch sisters for stealing one of their own, Mark is forced to choose between these two worlds.
“Filled with evocative and captivating scenes, strong female characters, and an engaging narration, readers will become engrossed immediately, while the threat and fear at the heart of this story, satisfyingly, sneaks up on them.” —Booklist, starred
“This coming-of-age horror relies less on supernatural terror than combustible human elements, but features sympathetic characters and sharp plotting. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal

About the author

Tim McGregor is the author of TABOO IN FOUR COLORS (Cemetery Gates Media), LURE (Tenebrous Press), HEARTS STRANGE AND DREADFUL (Off Limits Press) and the SPOOKSHOW series (11 books...what??). WASPS IN THE ICE CREAM comes out February 7, 2023 from Raw Dog Screaming Press. Oddly though, WASPS was named as one of the best horror novels of 2022 (publishing is weird sometimes). A former screenwriter and active member of the Horror Writers Association, Tim lives in Toronto with his wife and kids. More (mostly tedious) information can be found at timmcgregorauthor.com

This is my first time reading McGregor’s work and boy have I been missing out. I love his eloquent writing style and his ability to create such believable, well developed characters.
Wasps is essentially a love story set in the 80’s about a “regular” kid named Mark and an outcast named Georgia ( George). George is one of the most unusual and interesting characters I’ve come across in a long time and I felt for her so much.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot because I went in blind and I’m glad I did. All I knew was it was coming of age, that I was a fan of the publisher and I loved the cover.
The ending left me wanting more but I’m many ways it was the best way to end it. Read the book and that will make more sense.
I know it’s only February but look for this book in my best reads of 2023 if not THE best book of the year. It’s one I’ll read and treasure again.
Thank you Tim, for writing this beautiful book. .

the reader is pulled in by the story as it unfolds!
New readers will not be disappointed at all!
First of all, Tim McGregor’s stories always deliver, and this was no exception! I can’t wait to see what he’s coming up with next!
This was a fun ‘80s vibe read with some paranormal elements, but it wasn’t scary per se? Idk it definitely gave more of a mysterious vibe with some horror elements, and mostly on the human side of things. It really deals with some tough topics, all through the eyes of a teenage boy.
I thought it was extremely enjoyable, & I feel like it had a bit of a King vibe! Which I LOVE his stories, but they don’t necessarily give me a scare. So if jump scares & horror are what you’re looking for, this isn’t for you! But if you’re up for some thrills, eerie elements, & can handle some disturbing topics (such as off page death of a parent, child abuse, and extreme bullying among peers—some physical, even), than I think this (is it—or isn’t it) witchy, candid, thrilling, & mysterious read—with an angry ghost as a sub-plot(!)—that focuses on characters most of all is def for you!!!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the physical AND audio ARCs!! All opinions are my own.
We also get to see Mark fall in love for the first time. The only problem is that he falls in love with one of the Farrow sisters-a family touted across town to have dealings with the occult in a time when suspicions were rampant, and used as a tool in which to justify bigotry and cruelty towards people who didn't fit the mold.
As McGregor weaves this nuanced tale-which reminded me of being in a town created by King-there are threads that represent various facets of humanity woven throughout the tale. I found these aspects to be the scariest theme of this story; after all, humanity is the conduit through which
darker actions and mindsets thrive.
If there was one thing that could have tipped this book into the five-star range, it would have been the inclusion of higher stakes and/or more of a horror element.
I highly recommend this book to readers looking for an interesting and new take on the coming-of-age story. And if you are interested in the audiobook, Dan Lawson is the narrator and he did a really great job on top of having a really interesting reading voice that fits the uniqueness of this tale.
I read and reviewed an advanced audiobook copy of this book thanks to RDS Audio via NetGalley. All honest opinions are my own.
