The Common Core is a typical effort by our educators' to concentrate on the brightest minds, neglecting the needs of the average student. The math questions in Common Core expect 3rd graders to not just multiply numbers, but to understand the theory behind it. However, 90% of the students will never have any need to know such abstract concepts. Indeed, I wonder how many school teachers are even qualified to teach more than the traditional and essential elements of arithmetic. The 10% who might benefit, can learn all that in advanced classes in later grades. Beyond that, any formal mandated top-down school curriculum is bound to be stifling, preventing new and creative approaches and individually tailored courses. One size never fits all.
I liked the book, and as the author under my simpler name, am of course prejudiced. But if you want an analysis of the real elements of human "IQ," one that goes beyond the generally recognized IQ and EQ measures, this book will reveal the many other traits and charateristics that we should be teaching our children. Major coverage is given to the fact that, in areas outside science and engineering, the high IQ students, who get all the preferential treatment, and move on to the most respected colleges, generaly do more harm than good to our economy and our institutions. Additional coverage is given to the history of education in America, tracing its path from early colonial days to the present. An interesting sidenote is Senator Ted Kennedy's admonishment that the literacy rate in Massachusetts was higher 160 years ago, before the advent of public schools, that it is today.
