Editorial Reviews
Review
“In Wasted Years, Harvey deftly weaves past and present, blending the strands of character and story to form the kind of rich tapestry that lifts the police procedural into the realm of the mainstream novel.” —Sue Grafton
“Like Thelonious Monk and other jazz greats who make the mood music in his books, John Harvey likes to play with form. In Wasted Years . . . [Harvey] switches time frames like song keys to tell a story about the cold hopes and lost chances that breed crime in the red-brick provinces.” —The New York Times Book Review
“The prose is pared down and tersely elliptical—Wasted Years wastes little language. But, as always with Harvey, less is bountifully more.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer
About the Author
John Harvey (b. 1938) is an incredibly prolific British mystery writer. The author of more than one hundred books, as well as poetry and scripts for television and radio, Harvey did not begin writing professionally until 1975. Until then he was a teacher, educated at Goldsmiths College, London, who taught literature, drama, and film at colleges across England. After cutting his teeth on paperback fiction, Harvey debuted his most famous character, Charlie Resnick, in 1989’s Lonely Hearts, which the English Times called one of the finest crime novels of the century.
From Publishers Weekly
This exacting examination of English urban life masquerading as police procedural owes much to the bruising kitchen-sink dramas of the 1950s by Alan Sillitoe, Keith Waterhouse et al. In his fifth appearance (after Off Minor ), the divorced, cat-loving, jazz-addicted inspector Charlie Resnick continues to trudge through the cold streets of an England adrift in celluloid-induced violence and American-style fast food (bastardized as only the cuisine-cursed British are capable of). A series of violent armed robberies are being committed in Nottingham by two groups. One team is clever; their counterparts are clearly a couple of teenaged yobs--one terrified and the other memorably vicious--who are rapidly becoming both more professional and more deadly. All this coincides with the early parole of another criminal anxious to settle a score with his informant wife and the cop she slept with. For his part, Charlie drifts back through the years, recalling the events leading up to his own marriage and its gradual dissolution in an unspoken, uneventful mist. By now Harvey's economy of prose is a given, as is his ability to pull together the many composite parts--the interlocking crimes, the boozing, infidelity and Resnick's very human bunch of underlings--that make a Charlie Resnick mystery such satisfying reading. No wasted time here.

From AudioFile
Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick likes his job, is good at it, and has learned to adapt to the divorced life with four cats. Suddenly, a parole hearing takes him back 10 years to the time he put a deranged criminal away and lost his wife to his grueling work schedule. Jonathan Oliver offers up the dry personalities of the Manchester detective bureau and assorted criminals with appropriate amounts of male introspection. Surprisingly, he doesn't soften his voice at all for the female characters, using his interpretation of dialogue to carry their personalities. It works, without the distraction of effeminacy. While the plot may become confusing from time to time, the vocalizations never do, even before speakers are identified. I have enjoyed all the Charlie Resnick mysteries and only have 2 more to have read them all. All are pleasant readings and not too tense. The Arthur has fully developed the personalities of all the characters.

The fifth and strongest entry in Harvey's Charlie Resnick series is less sensational on the procedural side than previous outings, focusing on two separate sets of armed robberies. One set does a good job of portraying a bullying wayward youth and his aimless follower, while the other very high-end, hitting banks and armored cars, and is rooted in Resnick's past. Harvey effectively cuts back and forth between the present and 1981 in order to show the past events and characters. As usual, the private lives of the police squad is further developed.

This book is so much better written than 99% of the genre that it seems a pity to criticize it. However... there is a problem. The author uses characters' consumer choices as little labels. One person eats a Linda McCartney meal, another listens to Lionel Ritchie. You can't help but feel that he is laughing at them. Not so Resnick who has impeccable taste. Near the end a bad character hops into bed with a Jeffrey Archer novel. It is then you realize that he is damned.
