I love this book!

I want to draw pink fluffy hearts around this book. When I was originally approached by Inkspell Publishing about reviewing an ARC of The Watcher I said yes because the cover is simply breathtaking. It might be silly to literally judge a book by its cover, but it’s always the first thing that I notice. Plus who doesn’t love angels? I mean really hot godlike creatures with wings? I’m swooning as I write this.

Mia Crawford is an amazing character, she might actually be one of my all-time favorites and that is saying a lot because I read more books than are probably healthy for me. Not only is she relatable, but she has this passion for knowledge and discovering the truth that I envy. Lisa Voisin has talent spilling from her hands with this story and you can tell it’s well researched. (Though I doubt many people have heard of the Book of Enoch, but I’m strange so I have.)

Voisin’s writing draws you in and right from the beginning you’re thrown into the thick of things and I love it. My problem with a lot of stories is they slow down so much that they get boring and it takes me forever to read because the story just doesn’t grab me. But The Watcher dug its hooks into me from the very first chapter on and I couldn’t put it down.

I adore the way Mia is written. She has just enough teenager in her that you can relate to her worries for friends and school, but not enough that you want to slap her and rant about how annoying she is. There is a balance between the two and Voisin has found it.

I’m pretty sure I enjoyed every character in this book and oh my god I totally want my own Michael! Michael Fontaine isn’t just the new kid at school, he’s a walking mystery and he has a secret that involves Mia.

'The Watcher' is a young adult paranormal romance that follows Mia Crawford - our 17-year-old leading lady - as her entire world is turned upside down once she realizes that the world she thought she knew isn't what it seems. After being attacked by a mysterious and terrible creature one day, Mia turns to Michael Fontaine - who claims to know nothing of the things she describes. Mia is sure he's hiding things from her and is constantly confused by the strange feelings she has around him - the way he makes her feel and the weird images of a different time and place that fill her mind. Determined to find answers, Mia goes on a journey where she discovers her past life - one that was filled with jealousy, love, and revenge. It also shows the devastating details of her previous death and the angel cast from Heaven for loving her. Mia must know decide if she will seek out her fallen love or let the past fall far behind her.

This was a very intense and beautiful novel unlike any other I've read before. It's full of deep topics like betrayal, jealousy, spiritual concepts, past lives, reincarnation, and true love. Mia was a great main character. I found myself immediately liking her and I could easily identify with her and her struggles. She was a realistic character with obvious flaws, but she was also really endearing. Michael was a great lead male character and I felt that his personality fit perfectly alongside Mia's. The plot of the story wasn't completely original, but it was done in a way that both broke my heart and filled it with hope and love at the same time. The romance and story of true love that broke all boundaries really moved me - and I usually roll my eyes at these types of situations in books and movies.

Mia Crawford is a vibrant, outgoing high school student in West Seattle with a close circle of friends. She shares most things in her life with them, but not the strange occurrences that keep her guessing her own sanity: cloudy dog-like creatures with menacing red eyes that chase her, voices cloaked in static, flickering lights, and even real people no one else sees. Mia’s family isn’t around much – Mom works a lot, her dad has a different life out of state, and her brother is away at college. She feels everything with deep intensity, as the smallest events trigger emotional responses landing on both ends of the spectrum.

Two new boys arrive at her high school this year: the first is mysterious Michael, who experienced death after an accident but came back. He is beautiful, strong, and seems to show an interest in Mia, always showing up at just the right time. She quickly develops strong affections for him, but he does not reciprocate her feelings. Instead, he pushes her away, disappointing and confounding her, giving rise to her insecurities.

Damiel, the other new boy, shows up dashing and debonair on his vintage motorcycle. All the girls swoon under his attention, and he pursues Mia persistently. Michael warns her to stay away from him, and she really doesn’t like Damiel. However, she is inexplicably drawn to him, in spite of being in love with Michael.

Mia loves the study of ancient civilizations and literature. She lives out her painful crush through a classroom reading of Shakespeare’s "Hamlet." Sometimes she has visions of another world, seeing at times a meadow, a loom, and large birds circling in a fight to the death. She also knows she has some kind of connection with Michael, and that he and Damiel have a history.
