(5 Stars) Enjoyable Thriller
I enjoyed this book very much! It was very difficult to put down once I got started. As soon as I finished this book, I dove quickly into book 2 just to continue the story - it is...

From the Author

The Watchman of Ephraim is the first book in my CRIS DE NIRO series. It's a bout a man's devotion to his country, his wife, and his faith.

Cris De Niro is a self-made billionaire, a hedge fund manager who was raised on the tough streets of Brooklyn, New York. On September 11, 2001, he loses his wife and unborn son in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The devastating loss could have led him to destruction but instead leads him to an epiphany of faith, yet rage still burns in his soul. He vows to protect the citizens of the United States from enemies domestic and foreign, and puts all of his vast resources to work for that cause.

Cris De Niro does what I and others who have lost friends and family from terrorist acts want to do but can't. Not vengeance (unless the sun has not set) ... he protects, even when our government cannot.

This was one of the sloppiest-written books I have ever seen. The text not only contained an extreme number of typographical errors and punctuation errors, some of them egregious (the coffee chain is not "Starkbucks"), but also misplaced synonyms (e.g., "peaked" over the car; "poured" over the map, etc.), but was also hindered by confusing phrasing in many places. Usually, these types of errors (even in lesser quantities) in a book are such a distraction to me that I stop reading. And yet, in this case, despite the errors, I enjoyed the story and the characters. So this author does have talent, but he should invest in both a copy editor and a proofreader. Why mask talent with these easily-correctible errors? After all, the English language is simply a communications system with certain conventions that make the message between the sender and the receiver easily understood. If this particular book had been, say, a computer program targeting a missile, the missile would have ended up in Topeka instead of Tehran. I do look forward to the author's subsequent books, but hope that they are not as gramatically or otherwise challenged as the first one. I appreciate that the above is only talking the talk -- so that I am also walking the walk, I will make an open offer to the author to proofread this book, for free and with the proper releases, so that subsequent readers can achieve full enjoyment and the author's talent can shine through without distraction. Just message me here, send me a hard copy of the manuscript, and I will have it back within a week.

As a reader of and avid fan of geopolitical thrillers, I found this author's plot imaginative and just plan good. (I liked his motivational blogs as well.) The world we live in is increasingly violent and ugly. This is a timeout from that setting. I simply cannot believe that there is nothing we an do about heinous hatred and violence. The most disturbing thing to me is that changing these acts is not something that can be done by politicians and laws. The change has to originate in each human heart and be a result of a code of morality learned by Judeo-Christian study. As we know that is not something that is valued globally. In fact it is very hard to find anywhere. Our churches are empty. Our families are broken. Many times we are amoral. We are fast becoming what we soon shall be. As a daily reader of the Bible, I believe. In closing, the mindset of the author, represents an acorn. And we all know the result that planting such an acorn can have, if we give it the nurturing it needs. Loved the book and look forward to reading more of them this summer in our reclusive summer home in the Outer Hebrides. Keep up your wonderful work Gerard!

The Watchman of Ephraim by Gerard de Marigny is a fictional book taking place a decade after 9/11. The book takes place in all over the United States.

Cris De Nero's pregnant wife died in the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. Ten years later, still recovering from the shock of losing his wife, Cris creates The Watchman.
The Watchman are a private organization, funded by Cris, a self made millionaire.

The organization which is made out of ex military, uses high-tech equipment and knowledgeable human resources to fight terrorism in places the government cannot or will not.

The Watchman of Ephraim by Gerard de Marigny is a fast paced thriller full of intriguing characters and suspense. The dialog is tight and the plot moves along in a fast pace.

Cris De Nero, the protagonist, is a self made man, a good father and husband. The characters, their interaction and relationships are well defined. The recruiting efforts for The Watchmen are described in a fascinating way and the way the company is transforming under Cris' leadership could make a book by itself.

There are several themes throughout the novel, patriotism, G-d and country, safety of others, loyalty and ethics being a few. I'd like to have read more about how the protagonist, an ethical smart man, navigates the filthy swamp which we call Washington DC.

The plot is enjoyable and solid, yet somewhat predictable and the main character is somewhat hypocritical (a devout Christian drive by revenge -- but it's not like there aren't enough precedences of that in history). That being said, I understand that this book is the first of a series and I know that it is always difficult to create an origin story in any medium while keeping the final product down to a manageable size.

Format: Paperback
The Watchman of Ephraim is a fast-paced political thriller, a novel of "what-if" suspense. Mr. de Marigny has written this novel in tight, spare paragraphs--free of flowery description and filler--and crisp, snappy dialogue that drives the plot along. The opening of the novel allows us a window into the 9/11 horrific disaster, as Cris De Niro's wife is trapped in the Twin Towers when the planes hit, and he heroically attempts to rescue her. This is almost painful to read, but necessary to set up the storyline.

The book then moves us along to Las Vegas, where Mr. De Niro has settled his family of two boys. He has placed all his money and energy into forming a homeland counter-terrorism organization to protect our country from outside forces. Fast forward along to 2011, and De Niro is alerted of a possible attempt to let loose a nuclear weapon over the city of Las Vegas on 9/11/11, to rival the original 9/11 on its tenth year anniversary. There seems to be a spy in his organization, and the plot moves toward an exciting finale: can Cris De Niro's team of security experts stop the terrorists from destroying Las Vegas and making history again?

While this novel was not what I originally expected, and is somewhat out of my comfort zone -- I usually prefer novels with more character development and descriptive prose-- I do realize that Gerard de Marigny is a talented author, in full command of his craft and capable of delivering an excellent novel. I found this novel to deliver on what it promised and hits the mark as a political/spy/thriller that asks the plausible question "What-if" and then answers the question with "Not on my watch"!
