The product description page desperately needs a simple explanation of what this thing is. I'll try ... from what I can tell it’s a heavy-duty plastic bag that holds water so it doesn't leak out. What makes it different from using an old plastic grocery bag is that this one has sides and a bottom that are semi-rigid, more so than a plastic wading pool but not as hard as a plastic food storage container. There are two versions, a larger one that sits on a table or the ground and a smaller one that has strings to hang it. You can use water only in it or you can put potting soil in it (according to the box), depending on what you want to plant in it. I don't see that there are any particular advantages to this product other that you would buy it if you like the way it looks. As far as holding your beers, most people I know get one of those small plastic tubs at the discount store for a couple of bucks and it works just fine for them ... forty bucks is a bit extravagant to use this as a beer chiller.
IS IT WORTH IT
Regardless of how you use it I think it's overpriced for a plastic bag. The gray hanging model that I got looks like a deflated punching bag it is decidedly non-decorative as a decorative household item. A less flattering description (but more accurate) is it is just plain dull.
I don't always deduct points when a product has an overly-prominent logo, as strongly as I believe that once I own something it's mine and I don't want the manufacturer's name, logo or advertising slogans plastered all over it. But I have a stronger aversion to garish logos when used on items that are designed and intended to be used purely decoratively. Especially if it's a no-name company that's not a world famous and respected fashion designer.
A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
When filled with water this bag weighs almost 20 lbs, far more than most ceiling plant hangers can handle. Even if you use heavy duty anchors it is probably too heavy, your safest bet is to mount a very heavy duty hook directly into a ceiling stud.
The string is nylon and should support the weight of the planter, however the strings are loosely tied at the top, and being nylon they can easily come loose. I don’t trust them without reworking them. In the plus column are the plastic snaps to remove the bag for cleaning. They are not especially practical for taking the plant down for feeding, though.
Despite the instructions on the box, filling this with potting soil and trying to grow plants in it is questionable. The pot is very deep and does not have any type of drainage, which could easily lead to root rot. If used as a pot for water plants (which can be beautiful in clear glass bowls), the effect is lost because you can only see the tops of the plants sticking up over the top of the opaque plastic bag. In our area the standing water quickly becomes stagnant and smelly and an attraction for disease-bearing mosquitos, wasps and other insects.
I might have liked it more if it was priced what its worth. But it’s not; both models are ridiculously out of the ballpark for what you get by at least double.
These are for water plants - put your aquatic plant (already in the pot) in the planter, put rocks in the bottom, and fill with water. These have no drainage for that purpose. They are really not intended as a normal hanging planter - they're too deep, and they don't drain. But they're great for hundreds of types of aquatic plants.
You can also use these as a cooler (will hold ice, beer, etc).
My complaint is that hanging ropes are not tied well, seems like they will come loose and fall easily, especially with the weight of water. In fact one of my knots fell apart in my hand just fiddling with it. If you're going to hang, you should melt the knot together so it stays in place.
But I don't really think they look good hanging anyway - the fabric looks sloppy to me. My favorite are the wide ones, when used on a flat surface. They look great, you can see the water, and there's room for several different types of plants.
after receiving it and using it, i am no longer intrigued.
this is a PLASTIC TOTE BAG designed to hold a plant supposedly to suspend from your ceiling.
it's WAY TOO HEAVY (almost 20 POUNDS of weight) to suspend from anywhere on your ceiling except from a HEADER BEAM with significant anchors and precautions taken to prevent your ceiling from COLLAPSING from the weight.
it LEAKS - um, yes it does - from the top edge - rather than calling it "leaking" it resembles "salt creep" in a saltwater fish tank - water ends up infiltrating the fibers of the TOTE BAG and getting saturated and then spreading down the sides of the plant bag.
if we had an outside pagoda, i would consider dedicating this gray tote bag to that structure.
otherwise, i do NOT recommend this for indoor use unless you really want an unstable, soft-sided tote bag to hold your plant.
hey, to each his/her own. just not my thing.
if you really want to get this thing, i recommend using it to hold STUFFED ANIMALS in your kids room.... but, not too large of a stuffed animal, because it's too small....
