Rowing has long been recognized as the perfect aerobic pursuit, with naturally smooth and flowing movements that don't tax the joints but do boost the heart rate. Now you can take your rowing experience to the next level with the WaterRower Classic rowing machine. Using the same principles that govern the dynamics of a boat in water, the WaterRower Classic is outfitted with a "water flywheel" that consists of two paddles in an enclosed tank of water that provide smooth, quiet resistance, just like the paddles in an actual body of water. As a result, the machine has no moving parts that can wear out over time (even the recoil belt and pulleys don't require lubricating or maintaining). More significantly, the water tank and flywheel create a self-regulating resistance system that eliminates the need for a motor. As with real rowing, when you paddle faster, the increased drag provides more resistance. When you paddle slower, the resistance is less intense. The only limit to how fast you can row is your strength and your ability to overcome drag. And unlike conventional rowing machines, which tend to be jerky and jarring, the WaterRower Classic is remarkably smooth and fluid.
From a fitness perspective, the WaterRower Classic works 84 percent of your muscle mass, helping tone and strengthen your muscles while burning far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion--from completely extended to completely contracted.
The WaterRower Classic is outfitted with a Series 4 performance monitor that's designed to balance technical sophistication with user-friendliness. The monitor--which includes six information and programming windows, six QuickSelection buttons, and three navigation buttons--displays your workout intensity, stroke rate, heart rate, zone bar, duration, and distance. Plus, the monitor is compatible with an optional heart rate chest strap and receiver, which helps you optimize your workout and achieve your exercise objectives.
The WaterRower Classic is handcrafted in solid American black walnut, which may vary in color from rich brown to purple/black. The black walnut was chosen due to its marvelous engineering properties, especially its ability to absorb sound and vibration, which enhances the WaterRower's quiet performance and smooth operation. Black walnut, like all woods used in the construction of the WaterRower, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. In addition, the wood is harvested from replenishable forests and is hand finished with three coats of Danish oil to give it a deep luster and warmth.
Other details include dual rails with four corner wheels that increase seat stability and reduce the amount of sweat buildup; a frame that flips upright for handy storage; and a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. The WaterRower Classic measures 84 by 21 by 22 inches (W x H x D), weighs 117 pounds (with water), and carries a one-year warranty on the frame and components (WaterRower will upgrade the warranty to five years on the frame and three years on the components with the completion of a registration form).

This rower is exceptionally well made. It is relatively easy to setup. It's easy to store and move around my home gym. It's smooth and consistent in operation. It looks like well made furniture. Yes, the program/computer that comes with is very basic. But it does EXACTLY what I need it to do and doesn't tie me into monthly fees to be guided in my exercise routine. I bought a very stable but inexpensive phone/tablet holder to mount on the frame and now I can easily watch any content I want while using this rock solid rower and I get the approximate feel of rowing through water but in a design that is simple, durable, and won't suffer from maintenance when computers, magnets, screens, or other mechanisms eventually wear out.
Simple is also elegant, and in this case, beautiful.
The resistance variability is the only thing I wish was easier to manage. Once filled with water, it's a small ordeal to add or remove water to vary the resistance and thus, impossible during the workout. However, the resistance at max water is significant and it's easy to work your way into a routine that is slower and approximate until you're ready to take it up a level or two or three.
It really is the perfect compromise of form, function, and cost. Highly recommended.
I purchased the WaterRower Classic. Putting it together was quite straightforward but I had a challenge with the first piece that serves as a brace and spacer at the end of the rails. The holes/screws were just a bit out of alignment. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get them to align so that I could tighten it down. The rest was a breeze. The instructions are quite sufficient and it's not very complex.
My first use reassured me that this was an exercise that I could see becoming a habit. I awaken between 4 and 5 AM every day. I spend two hours usually doing computer work. The WaterRower is so silent that I can use it when I awaken without awakening every living thing in the house. It's comforting swooshing sound (not at all like the mechanical sound of the rower on House of Cards) does not awaken others and provides a mellow white noise in the morning. Of course, being new to me, I don't yet have the stamina to use it for more than five minutes at a time. That will change, I'm sure. It is smooth, quite and solid as a rock. Nothing seems cheap about it - given what I paid I don't know how anything could be cheap on it. I've read reviews about the foot rests being flimsy - I believe that's a design feature that they flex. Nothing seems cheap. As far as the quality of the workout you get: like any workout you get what you put into it but I assure you, even low intensity use is taxing if done for an extended period of time. You feel it working everything but only after you finish and get up to find muscle groups pleasantly stressed.
For me - this is the perfect form of exercise. If anything changes with the quality or durability of this WaterRower, I will update my review. I plan to update this periodically so you know it works.
The build quality is far better than we expected. I was completely shocked to find out that the "Walnut" version wasn't a "Walnut finish" or "walnut stain" or other nonsense. _It's solid walnut_. No wonder it's so pricy! This thing is beautiful!
Also, maybe you don't care about this, but this rower is the one that's actually manufactured in the US by a US company. So the money isn't going overseas to a sweatshop.
Being a US company has some other advantages too. When the rower was shipped to us, we were dismayed to see that only half the needed parts had arrived. It's shipped in two boxes and FedEx didn't drop off the second box. The company made it right by first following up with FedEx, and then _overnighting us new parts_ when FedEx wasn't forthcoming. Try getting that kind of responsiveness out of an overseas seller.
Excellent product and definitely an eye-catching design/furniture (if you want to call it that). Part of the beauty of this is you leave it out due to the looks and I've found I use it more this way as well. Great low impact workout, I recommend grabbing the bluetooth attachment and testing out some of the mobile apps that sync with Strava etc. EXR is an up and comer similar to Zwift for rowing, or the Ergatta attachment are all easy updates.

I've had just the one 30 minute row so far (with a 4k rowing video on youtube), which was fantastic. This was much more comfortable and enjoyable than any high-end gym rower I have used before, and it's a work of art.
5 stars for the initial impressions and first use.

A beginner to rowing so I can’t make a comparison to other machines, however I feel that their machine is very smooth and easy on the elbow joints.
Swooshing of water is very soothing whilst you work out.

Delivery had a little delay but was okay.
