Top Customer Reviews
Two youths are super-best friends throughout most of their school years--being extremely close, “sensing” subtleties of the other, “being there” for the other, etc. One knows that he’s gay yet understands that his best friend is not, a fact that leads him to desperately need to separate, and he does so without little explanation. Some years later, when circumstances bring the two together both the deep, earnest friendship and the sexual difference (and desires) force a difficult “life review.” With excellent use of “flashbacks,”the effort toward a new ”realization” is skillfully portrayed and is well along when the author introduces “thoughts, problems, emotions, etc.” that seem so unlikely (unreal) and so denying of the earlier closeness that the basic original structure and on-going integrity of the story is doubted. Sadly, the story takes on the feeling of the forced need for more and more emotional upheaval, doubt, angst and anguish--reminding me of a soap opera that has to find more and more reasons in order to “do another season.”
I’ll surely want to try another story by this author, hoping he escapes “over-told emotion” for thorough integrity.
The story, done in flashback, is one of rediscovery of the bond once shared by two close friends before one moved away because he could not come clean about his attraction for his straight friend.
A lot of emotional baggage is revealed from abandonment, missed opportunity, dependency to fear of acceptance of one's sexuality as described in the touching sex scenes.
Chase Potter is one of my favorite authors. After reading his first two books, I could not wait to read his latest. Like the first two, the writing is so fluid, told alternatively from Danny and Curtis' point of view. Before you know it, you are at the end of the book wanting more.
Definitely a five star in my book!
I fell in love with Danny here because he is so accommodating, even when Curtis remains the selfish and (in the end) terrified jerk that he turned out to be after Danny disappeared after high school.
Curtis was not so much in the likability column. There were plenty of times when I got really frustrated with both of them (mostly Curtis) as they struggled to come together, but then author Potter did something nice to spur me onward.
This is a beautifully written, carefully plotted, book that explodes about 75% through and takes off in a wild direction no one expects--especially the reader.
In the end, the title will catch you and so will two characters who redeem themselves, and the author.
"And he flashes me a subtle smile that reaches all the way to his eyes. I stare right back, and in those eyes I taste the color of the sea."
I am so head over heels in love with Danny and Curtis' story.
I'm not a fan of flash back's but the past flash back's were done in a way that only enhanced the strength of Curtis and Daniel relationship by giving you those important moments that set both men on the path of their life that separated them but then ultimately brought them back together again.
"His blue eyes shine, and his voice is a whisper and a prayer. " “You’re beautiful.”
-heart swooning- I think I've just fallen in love with Mr. Potter's writing style.
Kindle formatting was excellent on my iPad and the book has been thoroughly proofed.
The Water Will Catch You is on my recommended list.
