Waterbirds Edition Unstated
Purchase options and add-ons
The book John James Audubon would have made if he had used a camera.
Brushing aside rattlesnakes on Green Island, Texas, or enduring the bitter cold of an Alaskan winter, Theodore Cross has pursued waterbirds with passion. On four continents, from the tundra of eastern Siberia to the tropical islands of the South Pacific, he has captured elegant and unusual birds―from auklets and egrets to gannets and sanderlings―in peak action, be they courting, landing on a perch, plunge diving, or engaged in aerobatics. These breathtaking photographs are accompanied by gracefully written field notes and fascinating accounts of the birds’ habits and habitat. The book is introduced by an extended anecdotal essay giving insights and observations of the extraordinary man who, at age eighty-five, is as eager to track down an eagle in Alaska as he was when he began photographing in midlife.

Lovely and wry narrative decribes the author's fascination and rapture with these fabulous creatures. Cross invite the reader into his adventures and his total awe.
One bad note though - the book has been bound wrong - I was shocked to see this.
Beginning after Page 24 the page becomes Page 40 and then goes to backward to Page 25 with all of these pages in the book upside down.
I will have to return the book.
Perhaps this is why the book is "temporarily out of stock" - a disappointment for a book of this quality.

Who could resist? Certainly not me - I love birds, but my husband is the truly serious one (this goes in his stocking - a wonderful last minute addition).
Oh yes, you can see a number of the photos from the book on the All Things Considered article site.
