Editorial Reviews

The Waterhole is the story of Miller, a soon to be college graduate with a very uncertain future. Miller takes sanctuary in a neighborhood bar where he meets his friends, roommates, and college buddies, in an environment safe for everyone to rant, vent and decompress as they share their hopes, dreams and anxieties about the future. Miller chooses the bar any day over dealing with his girlfriend, their failed relationship and his pending college graduation. While his two friends, Jim and Murphy, are taking steps to start new lives, Miller sinks into a world of one-night stands and hangovers until a friend from his past returns to the bar, bringing Miller's world crashing down all around him. A coming-of-age drama as well as a triumphant commentary on young people carving their path in today's uncertain times

I bought this movie solely because Patrick J Adams was the lead actor. After watching the trailer and teaser scenes I thought one of the characters would have a larger appearance throughout the movie but they didn't. I wasn't so much disappointed as I was curious as to why it seemed that way to begin with.
I wouldn't consider myself a film buff nor a casual movie goer, but somewhere in the middle, and this movie was interesting to say the least. The acting is well done, as well as the camera work. I believe that the quality of Independent films are beginning to surpass the big Hollywood-budget films simply because of the heart being put into the work. The Waterhole fits into my belief. It's nice to see people doing things because they have faith and put heart in their work, and it's clear the entire cast and crew felt this way making this movie.

The Waterhole is a provacitve and smartly written film that focuses on the confusion many of us face when we are in the purgatory phase of trying to decide what to do with the rest our lives. The lead actor does an excellent job portraying an intelligent but floundering young man trying to break free of the bar filled life he has surrounded himself with. He is so likable that you find yourself rooting for him even when his dark side is leading the way. It's a clever, funny, thoughtful movie that everyone can identify with and you may even come away with a renewed since of hope.

Nathan Cole's script provides a darkly funny and striking tale of a young man trying to "find himself" in a place, much like the locales many of us are familiar with, that seems to prevent him from doing so. Patrick J. Adams plays "Miller" in a way so that we identify with him and somehow are irritated at his inability to conquer himself. The coup-de-grace of the film, far and away, is Joey Klein's reckless "Cracker", who brings an unexpected gravitas to the reality of his own demons.

Curious as I had spent some time in Reno. What a surprise! Smart little movie, great observations, loved the humor! Really captured that time of life for all of us. Amazing acting, well written characters with razor sharp dialogue. Great to see the little films finding a place in movie world.

Great movie, and a great story. The dive-bar setting and cast of characters are relatable, memorable, and entertaining, and remind me of my earlier years. The dialogue makes you feel like you're sitting at the bar watching it all unfold in front of you. Definitely a must-watch film.

This coming-of-age (read: sober up and get a life) film is a fine example of independent filmmaking. Joey Klein gives a gripping performance and the biggest little city in the world never felt so hauntingly desolate and warm at once.
