This book is not just another book on the Waterloo campaign. As the author states this book is not meant as a blow by blow account of the action but rather a look at different aspects of the battle including: The campaign, Orders of Battle, Command & Control, the battlefield, the various arms of the armies, and of course the main highlights of the battle. The last section takes an impartial look at the predominate myths and controversies surrounding the battle of Waterloo and the author comes up with his own conclusions in regards to them.
The book is massive (432pages) and makes superb use of colourful maps and photographs of the battlefield which explain the battle situation at key times, the deployment and various formations of forces.
The book also provides additional curious information by the use of text boxes including some first account experiences of the battle.
All in all this is an absolutely superb book, well researched using various sources of information, beautifully presented and printed on high quality paper. I have found it hard to put down , as I keep poring over the maps and digesting all the wonderful information to found in this book. This is a must buy for anyone with an interest in the Waterloo campaign. Lets hope Mark Adkin will do the same with other Napoleonic battles.

a picture paints a thousand words. I have read lots of books on napoleonic wars and waterloo but this battle only finally came together for me with this book.
Mark's framework to tackle and describe this large-scale battle is a series double-page spread oblique colour airphotos onto which the distribution of the units and how they moved over the day are shown. This graphically shows the time and space and flow of the battle. Between these overview framework shots, the book jumps down into the terrain with shots of the various buildings and obstacles that explains why many units seem to take impossibly large amounts of time to move small distances (made all the more difficult of course when people are firing at you!).
great read worthy of sitting on the bookshelf of any serious napeolonic fan

If you are a follower of the last days of Napoleon and this battle, this book is a must.. It gives you more information than you van imagine, it covers all the armies involved in this battle. The research that went in this book is awesome and most informative. Again I say, if you are a student of history you must purchase this book.

As someone descended from an officer in the Dragoon Guards cavalry regiment (R. Sweny) who was wounded, interrogated (he spoke excellent French as most educated people did in those days) by Napoleon late in the battle, and saved from bleeding to death by having his arm amputated by Napoleon's physician I do have a personal interest in the battle in general and the period in particular. Without Napoleon's intervention my branch of the family would never have existed since it was after the battle that he married and had children! It is the best companion to Waterloo that I have ever seen and a good addition to my library.

A very comprehensive study of the battle of Waterloo and the events leading up to the battle

This a book for Napoleonic Wars enthusists who want to get a little deeper into understanding the battle of Waterloo, what happened, why it happened and some thoughts behind the some of the events. Also a deeper view of the various elements of both armies, or more correctly all the armies involved in the battle, their origines and their roles.
I would have preferred more illustrations, like they are in the Trafalgar Companion, which sparked off my interest in getting the Waterloo Companion and both are excellent additions to collections on 'The War of Wars'.

Excellent Book. A comprehensive account of the Order of Battle in detail with descriptions of the Nations involved and helpful pictorial maps of the Battle in stages and brief notes on the Uniforms and their dispositions. People whom want a detailed account of the famous Battle can do no wrong by getting this book. It is an excellent book any self respecting Waterloo Napoleonic History buff will ever need.

Maps are great. If you like history/story this battle it really is a must have. I have read lots of books of Wellingotn/Noplean and the era I n general and just getting back into it. I'm sure this book is going to be the most informative so far as far as Waterloo is concerned.

It's a very good history book but I would of liked more pictures illustrating the cavalry and artillery especially the big guns and limber teams. The text is accurate and the book is very informative.
