"It has been a WHILE since I read a book, and I am SO happy I chose this one to "get back into my reading groove."
WATERS OF SALT AND SIN introduces you to a captivating new world where low-castes wear bells, and snooty high-castes look down on just about everyone. Klapheke did such an amazing job of making me interested in her characters from the moment they were introduced. Kinneret is one badass Salt Witch, and truly the star of the show, but she didn't outshine her supporting characters, which I find happens a lot these days. I miss Avi, Calev and Oron like I know them in real life, and cannot wait to read more about their adventures (which I'm about to do with the follow up novella, Fever)!
The world building is a whole beast in itself. From Jacokden to Kurakia and beyond, this world is huge, and leaves you breathless! Different customs, cultures, climates, clothes, food and more, suck you right in. Klapheke's world building skills are definitely on par with the greats, right down to her in-depth knowledge on how to sail a boat! The intense research she must have gone through, but damn was it ever worth it.
I give this book a 5/5, not only for the stellar world building, kickass heroine, and sexy love interest, but for the hungover longing for more I'm experiencing days after. Klapheke is one to watch out for!" ~Katherine Bogle, author of Savages
From the Author
I want to immerse you in the Uncommon World just like my favorite #1 fantasy books do! The Uncommon World series will include at least five books, plus the free prequel (available on my website). Each full length book is a standalone and novellas will link the books and introduce you to new characters along the way. Enjoy the adventure!

And the sea. It's strange how many fantasy books talk about the sea, sail over the sea, live next to the sea, but never actually dive into the sea! In Waters of Salt and Sin, the sea is another character. I loved that about this book. It gave a realness, an authenticity to the setting, and - by extension - the story.
I highly recommend this book to fantasy lovers, and I implore you to judge it by its cover! (Oh my gosh, LOOK AT IT! The same kind of epicness is on the page too.) I was going back and forth on whether I should buy it. I am so glad that I did because not only is it a fantastic read, but it also looks amazing on my shelf!
The characters were all distinct and the story engaging. World building was perfection. This story doesn't span the globe, but you know there is more to this world than we see. And that makes me want to read even more. If you like magic and fantasy with a strong female lead, then this is the book for you. Seriously, this is the book for you. Read it.
Plains of Sand and Steel is the second book in the Uncommon World series by Alisha Klapheke, but the novel is a companion novel, and not a direct sequel so the book can be read without having read the first book in the series, Waters of Salt and Sin first. I really, really enjoyed Plains of Sand and Steel, but I have not read book one yet, which I now need to rectify immediately! This book was so, so much fun! And I really love the covers for the series. Aren't they super pretty?
Plains of Sand and Steel is everything I love about young adult fantasy books. First off, it is described as " The Wrath and the Dawn meets Truthwitch in the second standalone, full length novel of the Uncommon World series." Umm, yes please!!! It has an awesome world, awesome characters and plenty of politics to keep me turning the pages just as fast as my eyes would read them. I was honestly super bummed that I didn't read the first book first. Not because I was lost, because I wasn't. Plains of Sand and Steel really can be read as a standalone. But because I loved this book so much that I wanted to read them all in order. I cannot wait to devour every single book that Alisha Klapheke has written because I can tell that her writing style matches my reading style to a tee.
Plains of Sand and Steel has Seren as the main character. I loved Seren. She really needs to step up almost immediately and made some hard choices. But she never backed down, which is what I loved about her the most. I also loved Ona and Lucca, and a bunch of the other characters. They all felt so real to me. Everything about this novel felt real to me. The scenes jumped from the pages and played out right before my very eyes, which is not an easy feat. But Alisha made it seem effortless.
Bottom line: fans of YA fantasy need to add this book to your TBR list. It is so so great and so worth the read. the books can be read in any order, but do yourself a favor and pick up all of them so you don't miss out on any of the great action. I love the world that Alisha has created in the Uncommon World series, and if you are anything like me you are going to want to read all of the books in this series. Plains of Sand and Steel is excellent. Period. The end.
