It was interesting reading about all the renovation work Valerie Poore does on her vessel-whilst we readers put our feet up and, all relaxed, drink coffee and wine while she does all the work! This book had a lovely combination of boating, restoration, adorable pet antics and even a bit of romance too! Lovely, smiley, feel-good reading.
I’ve read many books on moving abroad; somewhere new, searching for a property, renovating it: this is a bit different in that the property to buy and renovate is a boat/barge.
I love the occasional Dutch words sprinkled in-you are either told what they mean, you can gather or you can put your finger on it so the kindle translate feature tells you what it is. I like feeling I've learned something-and in this book I truly have-I knew nothing about boats and boating. I thought it wasn't really my thing, me being seasick the only time I went on what was supposed to be an idyllic day's cruising on holiday in Barbados! But this has opened up a whole new world to me, I want to read more memoirs about life on the water, a totally different read for me. I bought ‘Harbour Ways’, the next book in the series when I was only halfway through this one.
I really enjoyed this. All the repair, maintain and renovate stuff is really interesting too and certainly not boring-I loved every word! A lovely warm, cosy, pleasant read with much to interest and make me smile.

‘Very enjoyable read. I liked all the restoration tips hidden in there. I’d recommend it to anybody interested in boats, canals etc.’ Male reader, aged 45
‘A wonderful and very original way to deal with the horrors of divorce: restore an old boat. I loved all the little details. This book is in no hurry and, for that reason, I enjoyed it very much. Personally, when I got divorced, I went on a drinking binge in Italy. I think I would have preferred restoring a boat.’ Female reader, aged 55
‘Inspiring stuff. It’s full of wisdom and tiny moments of humour. There is also a good balance between the development of the author’s life (and lots of things do happen) and her increasing knowledge of boats and how to fix them.’ Female reader, aged 32
‘This is not strongly plotted. But that’s OK. If it was, it probably wouldn’t work. A relaxing read and very similar in pace to the boat she works on. I liked it very much.’ Male reader (publisher), aged 49
‘A wonderful story of love lost and canal boats written with a magical pen. A FINALIST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
Nestled between a large collection of remarkable old boats, Valerie works hard and dreams of one day owning an old barge of her own. While renovating the boat, in this parallel world of dockside life, she discovers her own capabilities and reinvents her life after divorce.
With her two dogs in tow, she explores the neighborhood, meets new friends, adopts a feral kitten, and develops a special, long-lasting relationship with a man named Koos. When she learns that the barge she has been living on will be sold, she and Koos travel the canals in search of her dream vessel. Putting life into perspective with humor and wisdom, Valerie learns to cherish the smallest comforts and live each precious moment to its fullest. Inspirational indeed!
