About the Author
Dr. Jean Lisette Brodey was a professor of communications at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she taught public relations. During her tenure, the Dr. Jean Brodey Student Achievement Award was created to honor the year’s outstanding graduating communications senior in the city of Philadelphia. In 1983 her book, Mid-Life Careers, was published by Westminster Press. In 1998 she was installed into the Philadelphia Public Relations Association’s Hall of Fame. Prior to teaching, she held four other positions at the university. Her first full-time job was writing facts and fortunes for Fleer’s bubble gum wrappers. As a young woman, she spent years writing poetry. This book is only a small representation of her work. She has two children, Lisette and Kenneth, and one granddaughter, Dara.

Each poem touched me in a different way. I found myself smiling and also being moved to tears at times. The poems are so brilliantly written that they bring forth such emotions from the reader. It is as if there is a world contained in each poem. I was fascinated, and felt a part of the messages that Dr. Brodey is sharing in this book. I have read it and re-read it, and am looking forward to doing so again!
After having read the "About the Author," I was even more impressed. In addition to looking forward to even more poetry, I wonder if there is any chance of the author writing an autobiography. What an interesting, accomplished, exceptional person!
I also think that this book will make a great gift. I plan on sharing a copy with the special people in my life for any occasion. I know they will love it, too.
Thank you, Dr. Brodey, for sharing your unique gifts and talents, and for sharing so much of your self through your touching, lovely, amazing, captivating poetry.
(This book is so great that I also purchased a digital copy, in addition to the paper copy.)
Dr. Brodey’s intelligent and vivid prose paints a wide array of images in the reader’s mind and emotions in the heart. In each poetic verse she unfurls tapestries of reminiscence, heartache, love and loss. I found myself in awe of the masterful way she handled symbolism and metaphor while telling a story in each of her poems. By the time I finished the collection, I realized that I had been taken on an emotional journey. A number of verses carried me into territory I had never chartered, but was able to visualize and experience through Dr. Brodey’s eloquent recollection and vivid imagination.
Though I find the entire collection captivating, I do have several favorites—some of which stirred my heart and brought tears to my eyes.
"Thursdays Demand Existence" deeply resonated with me. It gave a clear glimpse into the mind of an artist who longs to create, but is tethered to a world filled with obligation.
"An Ending" and "Funeral" both struck a heartbreaking chord. It felt as though somehow the author and I were united in mourning, though our respective losses took place in vastly different eras.
In some cases, Dr. Brodey’s poems served as a vessel through which I revisited moments of passion, wonder and despair that have occurred in my life. "My Way to Anywhere" is a book in which I believe many people can find some sense of comfort and understanding since at some point or another, many of us have faced the topics covered in these poems, though we don’t always find the bravery to face the intense emotions they sometimes stir up. Bravery, it seems, is something she has in large supply and perhaps some of it has rubbed off on me, as I’m sure it will many readers as they continue on their way to Anywhere.
While reading these glorious verses, I felt as if I had met her, I cried, mourned, loved, lost, and laughed with her. It held me spellbound as I traveled through her memories and life. Laughed out loud reading her children's verses, which very much reminded me of those verses, I grew up with, written by many of the classic children's poets.
Dr. Brodey's talent is deep; her prose written to delight and to touch one to the deepest core of their being. I believe anyone reading, `My Way to Anywhere' will find something in it that will touch them.
Highly recommended for all ages as in its pages there is something for everyone.
This is national poetry month, I'm glad I picked this poetry book to read. Poetry means different things to people. I think this poet wrote about what she saw in everyday life, love, respect, Mother Nature, she wrote with a rawness only a poet could. You could tell she was a lover of the written word. I envy her, for she could see and understand life as it was with a pen. Time then wasn't a rushed as it is today, she conveys that in this book of poetry. I have some favorite ones, "Grown Up" Her Words" Alone" WaterColor I I". I really enjoyed the journey with this author. Download and take the journey.
Each section of poetry reveals a different chapter in Dr. Brodey's life, taking us with her on that journey. Her section of children's poetry could easily be turned into individual children's books.
Her journey runs the gamut from laughter to tears, from hope to sorrow. I highly recommend going along on her journey.
