Olivia Brennan has had her life shattered. What started as a night out with her four best friends after graduation from high school, ended in tragedy thanks to a couple of drunk drivers. In moments, her best friend, her boyfriend, and the other two boy who rounded out their small circle, known locally as the fab five, were gone forever, leaving Olivia broken, not only physically, but broken in spirit as well.

The Way Back To Me picks up Olivia's story shortly after the funeral where her best friends were laid to rest and gives an insight into just how bad those days were. The depression, the drinking, being so out of it that she wasn't even up to recognizing the stranger who always seemed to find her drunken and passed out self and carry her home.

Over time things change, she gets 'better' though that's very much a relative term, and attempts to push on with her life eventually heading off to the college they were all supposed to attend together ... the same college that Cameron Stone goes to, Cameron being the boy who used to pick on her mercilessly back in high school.

Cameron also being the one who's resolved to 'fix' her.

For such a heavy subject matter, Anne Mercier manages to spin a story that interlaced with lighter moments, particularly as Olivia's journey into college life progresses, though even those are handled with a deft touch. As anyone who's lived through anything remotely similar would know, simply smiling again after such a tragedy can bring with it its own special kind of guilt.

Having read the synopsis and a short excerpt from chapter one on a blog page I follow, I was so captivated that I didn't hesitate to one-click and dive right in and was not at all disappointed.

As I'm sitting here writing this review, I'm finding it extremely difficult to come up with the precise words to describe The Way Back To Me. To say I enjoyed this book, would be a complete understatement. This book stripped me bare, and devastatingly ripped me apart. It left me exposed to the numbing realization that not all love stories are hearts and flowers. Some are filled with pain. Some drip with despair, and anger. And others can leave you with more questions than answers.

Olivia Brennan endured what no one ever should. Long gone is the energetic and kindhearted young woman with her entire future ahead of her. Starting college should've be one of the best experiences in her life. But how can Olivia enjoy such a thrilling experience when everything reminds her of what should've been.

Cameron Stone doesn't know this dark, emotionally-scarred version of Olivia. If he's completely honest with himself, he never truly knew the "before" Olivia either. All Cam knows is he has to save her...from the pain, from herself, and from utterly losing herself completely.

I've read my fair share of books that can make you feel invested and connected with characters, like you know them on a personal level. But what Anne Mercier delivers in The Way Back To Me, is what I can only describe as a deep ache. An ache for what was lost. An ache for closure. And the ever existent ache that contradicts the saying that time heals all wounds. I felt that ache deep within myself for what both Olivia and Cam have endured. But as the story progressed and time started bandaging the wounds within each of them, hope began to appear. Hope for acceptance, for love, and for life. This hope began to slowly mask the ache.

I'm a huge fan of Anne Mercier's Rockstar books and she definitely did not disappoint with The Way Back To Me! Mercier delivers a beautifully poignant story about trying to move past a tragic event that has destroyed your whole world. Post tragedy, in an effort to try to move forward with her life, Olivia goes to college and winds up rooming with Alexa, someone from home who she has been friends with most of her life. Alexa's older brother, Cameron, is the boy who used to bully Olivia back home and she is none too pleased to see him. Back home, Olivia used to take the abuse and never fight back however, the "new" post-tragedy Olivia has no problem standing up to him. Cameron is a sexy, alpha football player who harbors his own secrets. Cam and Liv have insane chemistry and a true love-hate relationship yet they are drawn to each other despite their past history. Cameron tries to do whatever he can to help Olivia move on with her life and in the process, the two unexpectedly fall in love.

Mercier has written a beautifully tragic story that delves deep into the process of healing after your world crumbles. What I love most about the relationships amongst the characters in Mercier's books is that they are well developed and multi-dimensional. She peels back their layers one by one throughout the story giving us a deeper understanding of who they are and why they do what they do. When Mercier finally delivers the scene where Olivia tells Cameron and Alexa the full details of the tragedy she lived through, be prepared to have those tissues handy as it's a tearjerker! The story will twist your insides and hit you right in the feels.

The Way Back To Me isn't only sadness though. It is funny, it is uplifting and it will make you smile in between the tears. It is a cliff hanger so be prepared for it to end abruptly and boy does it with a shocker that I did not see coming! Grab this book----you won't be disappointed!
