Several years ago, I set out to read about as many of the United States presidents as possible. Reading about the great leaders in America's history; leaders like George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan is an unforgettable experience that tends to leave a mark on each reader.

During this political season filled with failed policies and lackluster leadership, I set out to read about a few men who may one day occupy the Oval Office. The first book is written by the Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan. His book, The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea is a transparent look at the Wisconsin native and his vision for America.

Readers will be impressed with Ryan's unassuming style. He's a small town boy with big dreams for America. There's no political pretense here; just well-thought out ideas that Ryan proposes in order to rescue our country from the clutches of the Obama administration.

Several reforms are proposed by Paul Ryan. The first proposal he presents is entitlement and health-care reform. The goal here, according to Ryan is to begin by repealing Obama care, the prized jewel of social progressives. Ryan makes it clear that he intends to save social security, medicare, and medicaid. But the current policies will, in the final analysis lead to economic disaster. Ryan proposes commonsense solutions which promote competition among insurance companies and doctors which will ultimately drive down prices; not to mention put more money back into the pocketbook of Americans.

The second proposal includes an economic growth component. Ryan addresses the growing national debt crisis which is over $17 trillion and rising. He addresses the liberal proclivity to tax and spend.

I found this to be a few things: 1) An easy read 2) A great insight into a good and intelligent man 3) An eye opener regarding the 2012 election 4) A great view from the inside of our distorted political system 5) A good and positive point by point addressing, including proposed solutions, on the issues of today.
Anyone who would like to know more about Paul Ryan will not be disappointed in reading this book

I expected this to be boring. It is the first book I have read regarding politics. I enjoyed it very much. This is real hope and change. Most believe we are on the wrong track, as a country. I like Ryan's ideas and positive attitude. He had a humble upbringing, is smart, down to earth and not afraid to make the tough calls so our children have a chance.
I realize there are biased reviews here, some will never like republican ideas and the same for democratic ideas. But here I see someone who can work across the aisle, which the current administration promised and then immediately proceeded to divide our country.

I purchased the book thinking Mr. Ryan would offer specifics on his economic proposals, but all I saw was pie in the sky by and by. Yes, I'm for motherhood and tax reform but I wanted concrete proposals, not mere verbage.

I'm actually a Paul Ryan fan, but I had hoped for more specifics on what his plans were for this "way forward." I think it's a good start, and he obviously would have bored us to tears with laying it out in legislative detail. I think he's a good man with good ideas - just hope he can do something with them other than write books!

Drawing from his childhood in small-town Wisconsin, his early career working for Jack Kemp and Bill Bennett, and his time as a Congressman and Vice-Presidential candidate, Ryan articulates a clear vision for a conservatism with heart that is a breath of fresh air between the "entitlement" mentality of liberalism and the "crony" conservatism that has been pro-business but not necessarily pro-market. His priority of local community empowerment over an elitist centralized government is an argument that is clearly articulated in this thoughtful yet readable work. I would encourage anyone interested in understanding the rational argument for limited government to consider reading this well written book.

In the past, the Republicans have just been criticizing the policies of the Democratic party. The didn't have a comprehensive vision for the future. That has ended with this book.

In this book, Paul Ryan provides an articulate, well reasoned plan for solving the problems of our country. His solution is based upon enabling civil society - local community, churches, businesses, etc. and getting away from the current approach of starting the solution through the Federal Government. His reason for this is two fold: (1) it works and he provides examples of how it is working today, and (2) we can't afford the current path of focusing on Federal Government solutions.

Mr. Ryan provides many examples of local civil society that is working together to solve the problems. The best part of the book is when he focuses on poverty. Let's face the facts, the Federal Government's "war on poverty" has not worked. 50 years and trillions of dollars expenditures later, the rate of poverty is 16% down from 19% and it is higher than it was 25 years ago.

Mr. Ryan's solution to the issue of poverty is actually occurring today in cities around the country and he provides examples from Detroit, Cleveland, San Antonio, etc. These solutions are local churches and charities funded by donations that help people to get on their feet again. Let's be clear on this, Mr. Ryan is not saying that the Federal Government has no role in solving poverty, but that the role should be in enabling local civil society with funding and support.

No, that doesn't mean that we cut funding but that we change the focus - from top down solutions to bottom up solutions.
