What is the dominant element in your lifeEarth, Air, Fire or Water? It matters, says Wiccan high priestess Lipp, because the dominant element affects "how you relate to the elements" and "your perceptions of the world"and also has ramifications for work, love and other aspects of daily life. Lipp explores the meaning of the elements and offers easy-to-do quizzes, exercises and rituals to determine your dominant element and create the elemental balance needed for self-actualization. An Air personality, for instance, might have creative ideas, but needs some fire to be able to execute them. In Water people, on the other hand, emotions rule, and they can be "strikingly magical." Rituals involve chanting, visualization and the use of easy-to-find objects that represent the elements. Lipp also provides simple and practical tips on how to bring the elements into your daily life (adding pillows for Earth; put seashells in a vase for Water, etc.). For those with an interest in Wicca and the influence of nature on peoples personalities and lives, Lipp offers a pleasant and positive-toned handbook to achieving balance.

`The Way Of Four' is also a workbook, helping you to study which of the elements dominate your life in different aspects, so have a pencil ready when you start reading. These little Q&A sections are fun, not at all like a test, and increase the enjoyment of the book as you learn more and more about yourself and the world around you. I swear I can identify another person's dominate element now, just by looking at them.
Lipp studies the Elementals also, the Beings associated with the Elements (sylphs for air, salamanders for fire, undines for water, and gnomes for earth). The information she shares on these creatures is absolutely fascinating, and explains some of the influences of the Element on your life, and on the world.
`The Way Of Four' is a fun and highly informative read. I still read books on the elements, but Lipp's book is the best I've come across. If you are studying a new path or have been walking the pagan path for years, this book is guaranteed to bring something new and fresh into your life and your way of thinking about the elements. Make this your first book on your list. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!
Even though there was a lot of work involved in gathering the information for this book, I thought a lot of it was fun, but ephemeral (to say the least). What I was looking for was a book with deep elemental understanding. I didn't get that.
The only useful part of the book was the exercises but I was looking for something like a serious elemental attunement.
The concepts were incredibly simplistic, but (even worse) they were also trivial. Most of the book was concerned with concepts that most people with a relatively good grounding in witchcraft and wicca practices could work out for themselves - like how to use the elements in ritual and the elements at play in the home and at work.
For me the worst and most irksome part of the book was the elemental correspondence supposedly found in commercial perfumes (many of which are synthetic).
I wasted my money on this book and it's a shame because it is such a great concept.
Deborah Lipp has written a very thoughtful, entertaining and enlightening book about self examination and creating balance with your own natural personality and tendancies.
The text is well researched and there is much to learn from and think about.
Something that we have little time to do in our lives and work is think about How are we affecting ourselves? How are we affecting others in work? and DO we need some redirection to bring out the best of our characteristics and bring balance to that which is not balanced?
Practical and informative and of course...MAGIC.
