The passing of John Paul II provoked questions about the Pope, particularly in his relation to modernity. Was he opposed to the tenets of modernity, as some critics claimed? Or did he accommodate modernity in a way no Pope ever had, as his champions asserted? In The Way of Life, Carson Holloway examines the fundamental philosophers of modernity-from Hobbes to Toqueville-to suggest that John Paul II's critique of modernity is intended not to reject, but to improve. Greatest of Dr. Holloway's Books

In his latest book The Way of Life, Dr. Holloway effectively argues that reverence for God and focus on Christian principles are the key foundations for the highest democratic beliefs, true respect for all human life, and to reorient ourselves to not only what is our best self-interest but also the community around us. Dr. Holloway definitely succeeds in his endeavors in this book.

Fanciful Tautologies

The easy thing in life, and the most crazy, would be to believe that history is what we happen to like to think it is, just because we happen to like to think it. Everything you need to know about Holloway's book, and I'm betting his whole intellectual trajectory is found early on this book. You couldn't do better for the self-indulged tautologies that reactionaries like this man casually entertain than this: "Liberal modernity is characterized by a turning away from the fundamental concerns of a premodern political thought." (p. x, Preface.) Wow, you really have to put on your thinking-cap for that nugget of information. Gee, well, yes, because it did not happen in premodern times, and is by definition part of modernity, it doesn't have the same concerns. This is just silly. So far the author says nothing, but he loudly announces his intent. To sneak in a lot of whatever he happens to think into history, by tautology. So get used to it. He goes on to say, "Liberal modernity rejects the lofty pursuit of virtue in favor of a more mundane pursuit of material security and satisfaction." Again, pure silliness by any reading of history. Of course not all of modernity has been liberal, and many characters like Hegel have been used in all sorts of directions, from liberal to conservative with a vast influence, even on those who hate his thought. . And if you can read Hegel and not at least come away with a lofty pursuit of something, even if not your cup of tea, and that something not be related somehow to virtue, then I have got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. One could go on and on, citing philosophers and thinkers that show these tautologies to be false. But people who are entertained by these fancies will just come up with new ones. They imagine others apotheosize Progress as a form of bias, because in their world there is only the see-saw of bias. No, people who take history in its contradictions seriously just want virtue, and that virtue is close to truth. The odd fact about reactionaries is that they are complete relativists in the historical arena whenever it happens to suit them.
