I was expecting, well I don't know what I was expecting other than book similar to In the Spirit. This novella, however is even more fast-paced, more dark and more sexy than In the Spirit.
Melody, the main character, gets the short end of the stick in Life. She goes from an abusive childhood life to a suddenly abusive boyfriend. At the beginning of the novella, she tosses her nemesis off a cliff (!!!) and runs back home to Kotahi Bay, and that's where the story starts in earnest.
I have to say I was quite smitten with Melody. She has a temper, comes dripped in sarcasm and is quick to take off her dress when she decides to go after someone she wants. Yet she is also kind and thoughtful, and learns some harsh lessons about running away from trouble rather than facing it.
Like In the Spirit, there is an undercurrent of a lot of world-building that we haven't seen yet in the series, but unlike In the Spirit, there are some characters living in Kotahi Bay that are just as interesting as Melody herself.
I'm really digging this series so far! Highly Recommended.
