Rarely would I ever be so cliche as to suggest that a single book shaped my life--but this is certainly one of them. I still mentally picture the woolly mammoths next to levers whenever I think of simple machines. Twenty years and two degrees in engineering later, I can honestly say that this book sparked my curiosity in the natural world and made me strive to understand it in completeness. Macaulay should be hailed as one of the most brilliant visual teachers I have personally ever bear witness to. I cannot speak enough positive remarks about this text.

This book is one of my fondest childhood memories- not only are there interesting descriptions of the way various machines work, but there are insights into space, magicians acts and the great pyramids. All "widgets" are represented by woolly mammoths, creating a fun "count the woolly mammoths" game for kids to play while learning about a certain topic. Never dry, even the cover inspires imagination with is whimsical use of simple machines to spell out the title. A great book to have and to keep.

I bought this book for my son over 20 years ago. It was his favorite, and it shaped his career. The Way Things Work introduces the young mind to physics in an interesting and understandable way. My grandson turned 10 this summer, so I thought he would enjoy a copy of his own. He is as thrilled with it as his father was and won't put it down! Guess what his first book report for school was about.

This is a truly wonderful book for kids and parents to read together. Children enjoy the wonderful pictures and get an introduction to the way the world works. The detailed descriptions manage to teach the parents a thing or two making the book even more of a joy to read. Highly recommended.

A great book for any child. We bought this for a friend's son, and they've been able to use it as a guide for learning and understanding the technical side of inventions and natural resources.

I think every kid who is even a little interested in what makes things tick should read this book.... It might help the next inventor build that better mouse trap..

My son has enjoyed this book immensely-- he's very mechanically and visually oriented, and this book was a great combination of pictures and written explanations.

great info in this book - some less mature audiences will find a few parts of the reading boring and the more mature will find parts a little elementary
