Obstinate Pride

Not what we were expecting

This was a decent continuation of the way walkers chronical. We begin right where we left off in the previous novel, and follow our protagonist as he makes his way across the continent towards the citadel. Along the way, we are shown more of the interesting world first given to us in the way walkers. Leighs world building is top notch. She has a way for detail that George rr Martin and Robert Jordan would be proud of. The magic system is becoming more defined, and is demonstrated much more in this novel. However, the story itself feels disjointed, and at times, snail mailed. More so, I feel that the author explains her actions too much to the reader. Let me elaborate... Many times in the novel, our protagonist asks more knowledgeable characters about his growing abilities and magic. Instead of simple answers, we are bombarded with paragraph upon paragraph of explanations pertaining to the question. This may seem like I'm complaining because of my own personal feelings on the matter, and you would be correct, however a good 1/3 of the book is someone explaining some aspect of magic or history to him. It almost feels like the author was just adding on whatever she could to make the book just a bit longer. The book was not that large to begin with, and the constant unnecessary explanations--often given at odd times--really distracted from the story. Even the ending feels rushed and unfinished. It feels like the author was rushed into making a finished product for an underdeveloped story. I was really disappointed with the pacing. I believe that this could have been written so much better without the constant stopping of plot, only to explain something else in you're fantasy world, that you yourself made up! Why do you need explain everything? The best stories give you a concept, with very little explanation involved. No one is sure how the lord of the rings magic system works. Heck, how can Gandalf be a great wizard, without casting any spells! He fought orcs with staff and sword, why not fireballs? Magic does not need to be explained on every level, so please don't try too. Also, The world itself is strange. It's a mix of science, magic, medieval, and Victorian times; with a hint of apocalyptic future undertones. If you read the first book, I would recommend reading this one also. Just don't have high expectations because of a the first entry. The author is definitely getting better, but I think she may have rushed this one a bit too quick to pasture. Hoping for a better sequel.

A really fun read! Bought the first book for $0.99 after reading the first part of it with Look Inside. Bought the second book, this one, immediately after finishing the first. Finished that and tracked down author's website to find out she's making excellent progress on book 3. So I'd definitely recommend reading the first book first. Start with the Look Inside preview, and if you like that then you will enjoy the rest of the book and the second book. First book felt like it reached an ending point for a book in a trilogy, second book seemed to end too soon, but it too finished it's story arc, so that's probably just me wanting to read more. If the author read's this, don't fret about when it will be done, fans are always crazy crazy for the next book, and that means we love it. So accept the love and please ignore our crazy. Spelling/grammar and all that were good, and I'd be annoyed if otherwise. Hopefully the author will create a mailing list just for her books, blog entries, etc. Right now the only option is the publisher's newsletter, which will make it hard to remember after a few months which author/series I was actually interested in.

A good middle book in a trilogy, with all that entails. Plot takes over the characters for a while, and being a middle book it develops a lot of narrative threads without resolving them. There is a very brave subversion of expectation and changing direction about mid-book, but I admit I would have prefered the more low-key angle it had before scaling the conflict.
We also get more worldbuilding here, again, for necessary plot reasons - it's still focused around the characters and feels relevant, but it does get heavier. Also, things getting much darker make it overall just less of a fun book. I love the protagonist and am very invested in his journey, I just hope the wild ride of misfortune he's on will slow down a bit.

Loved this book! This is a continuation of Jathen's coming of age, and we get some real development in his character. He, and we, discover more about him. Whereas the first book gave him, and us, some pretty serious losses, this book offers more hope, and less loss. I admit to a bit of trepidation to reading Book 3 when it becomes available – I don't want more loss like we had in Book 1, and managed to skip in Book 2.

The author has developed a marvelous universe. It has the same depth and diversity found in Tolkien's books, but these books are NOT a re-telling of Tolkien's stories!

Jathen matures somewhat in this book. He begins to think, and act, more like the ruler he is destined to become, should he choose that Path. My biggest complaint about this book is I finished it, and Book 3 is not yet available!

I enjoyed Book 2, which was a relief after the tragedy in first book. I kept waiting for the shoe to drop with more deaths. Jathen's reasons for not reaching out to his relatives were thin, especially after his part in discovering the missing city. I can't wait for the next book!

I you read J. Legh's frist book "Way Walkers: Tangled Paths", I know you have lots of questions. "Broken City continues the story line giving new information and leaving you hungry for more. The story moves very quickly while becoming even more suspenseful and complex. Ms Leigh has created a complete world in vivid detail with characters who are real and scenery that you imagine you can touch. I can't wait for the next sequal.
