With Gregory! Except ...

Lucy is engaged. And her uncle is not inclined to let her back out of the betrothal, even once Gregory comes to his senses and realizes that it is Lucy, with her sharp wit and sunny smile, who makes his heart sing. Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her spirited, witty, inimitable style, Quinn (It's in His Kiss) wraps up her Regency era Bridgerton series with a tale that takes to task the notion of love at first sight. Gregory Bridgerton's six siblings have all fallen prey to love, so he figures he need only sit back and wait for "the one" to waltz into his life. Then he meets Hermione Watson. The "breathtakingly perfect curve of her neck" convinces Gregory that she's destined to be his, but Hermione's practical, plainspoken friend Lucy Abernathy throws cold water on his aspirations when she informs him that Hermione's heart belongs to another. Quinn's final Bridgerton romance brings the series to a gratifying close. Although some readers will wish that it contained more of the sibling camaraderie that has propelled the series so ably—and less repetitive description of the protagonists' flaws—this tale is as frothy and festive as a glass of bubbly, and more than worthy of a toast. #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand fashion, appearing on the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code. Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame, her books have been translated into 29 languages, and she currently lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

A strong conclusion to the Bridgerton series!
5 out of 5 stars
A strong conclusion to the Bridgerton series!
Initially, I was nervous about reading this novel because it involves a love triangle. Reviewers on Goodreads saying this book should be skipped altogether also contributed to that nervousness. Determined to read the entire series, I read “On the Way to the Wedding” and found that I actually enjoyed this book more than some of the others in the series.I found Lucy’s character to be very relatable. She was very apologetic and worried more about her friend’s happiness than her own. In fact, she was under the impression that Hermione would be better off with Gregory Bridgerton. Even though she had developed feelings towards him, she still put Hermione first. I feel as though many readers including myself have been in this position before (prioritizing others before ourselves). Perhaps that is the reason why I like her character so much. She is flawed, which makes her all the more realistic.I quite enjoyed Lucy and Gregory’s romance, which communicates that love can be found in the most unexpected people. Gregory believed that Hermione was meant to be his perfect match. Because of this, he refused view Lucy as more than a friend. But the more he spent time with her to get insight on Hermione, the more he began to realize that Lucy was the one. By the time he came to this conclusion, Lucy stood at the alter, prepared to marry another. Gregory would not let her say “I do” without a fight. To all my Bridgerton readers, please do not skip this book. It is very much worth your while.Jess Approved?: ✓

Brief Summary: Gregory Bridgerton is the last of the Bridgerton siblings to get married. Having seen his 7 siblings fall madly in love, he is a romantic at heart who definitely believes in true love. When he sees Hermione, he knows without a doubt that he has fallen in love-at-first-sight. However, he's baffled when she doesn't feel the same way and even imagines herself to be in love with someone else. Her friend Lucinda offers to help Gregory woo Hermione, but instead she falls in love with him. Hermione ends up marrying someone else, and Gregory realizes it doesn't bother him as much as it should, which leads him to the realization that he never loved her in the first place. A conversation or two later with Lucinda ("Lucy," as he calls her), and Gregory is now madly in love with Lucinda. But we are to believe it isn't flighty and frivolous like his infatuation with Hermione. No, it is true love...deep, gut-wrenching, eternal love. However, Lucy is engaged to be married. The papers are signed, and although her heart belongs to Gregory, duty calls her to marry another man. If she refuses, her brother and best friend face certain ruin. Whom will she choose?

The Good: Julia Quinn is an exceptional author, and for this reason, even a book with such a weak plot as this one deserves at least 2.5 stars. A lesser writer could not have pulled it off. Although I knew right away how it would end, there were unpredictable moments that truly shocked me. Every book should contain a few surprises, and this one certainly does. Some of Quinn's heroines behave in a manner which is utterly inconsistent with the times, but I felt Lucy's behavior was characteristic with an earl's daughter. She's also unlike most other heroines. She isn't bold, daring, outspoken, and mysterious. She believes in order, loyalty, and duty above all else. I found her to be a realistic character.

The Bad: Gregory falls in love twice...once with Hermione, and finally with Lucy. He believes in this lightning bolt recognition of true love which is absurd. (He fell in love with the back of Hermione's head, for crying out loud.) It was hard to take him seriously when he behaved like a lovesick pup after one glance at her. The main story here should have been the love story between Gregory and Lucy, however too much time was spent on his infatuation with Hermione and then his and Lucy's separation from each other. Quite simply, Gregory and Lucy were not together enough for their romance to really come alive on the page. You don't experience them falling in love, and that is what I love best about a romance. They rarely speak to one another (except about Hermione), and they just aren't given enough time for a real relationship to develop. One of the things I love best about her other books is the witty dialogue between the hero and heroine. It's missing from this book. There's no spark, no chemistry. They are lacking passion as well. (Yes, there is one steamy scene, but you wonder how they got there. There's no build up.) At the end, Lucy misleads Gregory. It was unforgivable and selfish for a character who is selflessly marrying a man she's not interested in to save her family.

The Verdict: I would rate this book a solid 3 star rating. It's just OK. Having read 9 other works by Julia Quinn, I was tempted to give it only 2 stars, because I know she's capable of much more. If you're a fan of the Bridgertons, you'll most likely find yourself a bit disappointed that Ms. Quinn did not give the family the send-off they deserve.

    Better than the show

On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn is the last of the eight Bridgerton children's stories.

Will Gregory find love or heartache? Will Lucy find happiness in her arranged marriage?

    Lady Lucinda Abernathy
Lady Lucinda or Lucy to her friends is beautiful, funny, outgoing, and not afraid to be herself if she would just give herself the chance to shine. How Lucy thinks of herself:

Lucy was, in almost every visible way, just a little bit less than Hermione. A little less blond. A little less slender. A little less tall. Her eyes were a little less vivid in color- bluish-gray, actually, quite attractive when compared with anyone other than Hermione, but that did her little good, as she never went anywhere without Hermoine.

Lucy was a little bit less. Or perhaps, if one wanted to put a nicer sheen on it, she was simply not quite.

I like Lucy, but she takes her duty and love for her family to the extreme. She should have spoken to her brother before agreeing to something she honestly didn't want to do. But alas, we wouldn't have our story then, would we?

    Mr. Gregory Bridgerton
Gregory is the youngest Bridgerton son. He is separated from his brothers by three sisters. He is not the heir, but he is not without financial stability. Anthony takes care of his siblings. Gregory has been educated and is clothed like the gentleman he is, but he lacks ambition. He doesn't like to do anything without a purpose, and for now, his only goal is to find a wife and start a family.

My thoughts on Gregory, in the beginning, he comes across as a spoiled young man. He doesn't listen to his family and just likes to party. However, he indeed grows, but he needs Lucy's love to help him become a man. Is that the way it works? I don't know, but that is how it is for Gregory.

    Kate Bridgerton
This is the first time that we have seen Kate in a while. She throws a house party at Bridgerton Hall in Kent, where Lucy and Gregory meet. Kate helps chaperone some of the young ladies, but as you know, there is always a scandal at a house party. However, Kate helps Gregory see that there is more to Lucy than he realizes. So, if it weren’t for Kate, our heroine and hero may not have found each other.

    Four Stars
I enjoyed this installment, but I found that Gregory is my least favorite Bridgerton. He seems to lack something that his brothers have; I couldn't quite nail it down. However, I was immediately on Lucy's side. My rating for On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn is four stars. I do recommend this book and the series.

I hope you have time to check out the Bridgerton series on Netflix too.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn.

    Until the next time,
    ~Jen
