A fast paced read, "Beckoning Souls" revisits Nathan and Rusty as they struggle to come to terms with the death of Nate's wife and Rusty's mother. Moving from the town where Nate is firefighter, and away from the house that was filled with too many tormenting memories and hauntings to an isolated location where Nate hopes he will heal and that he and Rusty can get on with their lives sans ghosts and demanding spirits who draw far too much of Nate's strength and reserve energy. Father and son begin settling in, unpacking and looking toward the future. It is not long, however, until strange things begin to happen once again.
Nate, no stranger to the horrors of being institutionalized in a mental hospital, fears that if he opens the door to "things that go bump in the night," he might just find himself spending the rest of his life locked away. There's a strange neighbor, visitations from not only his deceased little brother and dead wife but others pulling at him making demands on him, and as it happens, also trying to drag Rusty into their entanglements. Near death experiences, horror stories from a seemingly innocent hospital, and threatening insanity take us back to a harrowing past and nightmare landscape from which Nate and Rusty must somehow escape.
With Halloween just around the corner it's a great time to curl up in your favorite chair with some hot cider and a story that will make you shudder and wish you weren't home alone. Take a walk on the spooky side with J.R. Tate and "Wayward Souls" and if you missed your chance before, jump into the first of these two fright-night tales, "Beckoning Souls" and give yourself to tales where the brave only dare to hope for a silver bullet to save them.
I also love the increased role that Rusty plays in this one. He and Nathan make a wonderful father/son team as they battle the souls who are tormenting them.
