Review

Poetry has all too often been pushed aside or completely ignored as nothing more than a difficult genre to understand. We Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn't Learn in a Textbook by Kym Gordon Moore is something different and shows how poetry teaches us many things about culture, philosophy, religion, politics, feelings, how to heal, and an abundance of history. It can help us find the emotions we need to express, assure us of our identity, or even make us question the foundation of the things we believe to be true until we see them from a different perspective. There is a world full of poetry; it is a universal language of understanding that can tell us where we've been and where we're going and help us better grasp what humanity truly has to offer.

We Are Poetry takes the concept of what poetry is expected to be and erases the clichés attached to the genre. This book is not the average poetry book. It actually teaches the reader how to appreciate the truth and misconceptions about this writing practice. I love the way Kym Gordon Moore broke down the truth of how poetry gives more than just an emotional response and then backs up the points with poems between the text. Although I am already a lover of poetry, I was pleased to learn that poets across the world are coming together and writing for so much more than to simply relay a message about a specific emotion or state of mind. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read in general while they learn something new about human nature, cultural differences, and unison, and a new way to understand the art of poetry.

From the Author

Poeta nascitur, non fit
A poet is born, not made

My mission is to use my platform to foster greater awareness in the fight against illiteracy and aliteracy by introducing poetic diversity and education among children and adults. This book is an ideal educational accompaniment for classroom studies or extracurricular activities. The voice of poetry continues to reverberate profoundly. That voice employs the internal and external characteristics of life the poet injects into their world of verses and the narratives they create. The decorum from which I write is born from my emotions and the heart of my experiences. Thank you for stepping into my world, where metrical dialogue is sprinkled with inborn ingredients of poetry that help us understand each other despite our differences.

We Are Poetry by Kym Gordon Moore is more than a collection of poems, which of course, would be a gift in its own right. As the title indicates, Kym’s book is filled with layers of insight about this genre as though it exists like you and me. Any school would benefit from including We Are Poetry in its curriculum. In fact, if I had pursued my youthful dream of becoming a teacher ‘when I grew up,’ her beautiful and insightful book would have been a useful tool in my classroom. Through Kym’s observations, she offers a glimpse into the beauty, benefits, and diversity of verse, fluidly dividing the book into her lessons.

In the beginning, I was captivated by her responses to how others feel that poetry is disenchanting and boring. If you share the same opinion, after turning the last page, I would be surprised to learn that you did not change your way of thinking. I felt empowered at the end of each chapter, and definitely after absorbing her powerful poem, “I Am.”
Below are the first few lines that will surely entice you:

    They say I am nothing
    in my someone-ness
    traverse into a flow
of the seen but not heard
nonexistent, divisible where liberty is not just
    not considered worthy to speak
    or to be respected
just an invisible occupation of space
    you think that of me
    yet my existence is more
    than the archives of silence
    I am.

The desire to spread a soft blanket “Under the Poet Tree” swept over me:

Where leaves rustle at the sound of verses and stanzas
wind blowing through branches of poetic expressions
growing from a trunk that holds a history of adventure
a journey rooted deep in the soil of passion and purpose

artistic thoughts born from the birth canal of the poet
whether touched or sniffed, tasted or heard
the sight of what thine eyes can envision
a uniqueness speaking from blood running through the heart

should the soul wander in the essence of written words
as the fruit of poetry replants the seeds that grow
flourishing into an orchard of endless poet trees
hunger satisfied from the picnic basket of a bard

inspiration blossoms like new spring buds
creativity unfurling through the pores of my mind
life takes on new meaning of literary excellence
under the poet tree shrouded by a poet’s design

Kym speaks about the architecture of poetry, its healing voice, how it fights against illiteracy. She invites you into her memories of the simple times where you’ll find yourself tucked into your cozy car, munching on popcorn, enjoying a great film. She pulls you into the delight of paper kites and county fair fun. She has you weeping alongside Mother Earth, and when life doesn’t go as you plan, she implores you to not cry over spilled milk; instead, pour another glass!
There is an emotion for everyone in this lovely book waiting to be drawn out.
    Highly recommended for all readers!

I’ve known Kym for about a year now and regularly follow her blog on WordPress. Although we don’t always agree, I’ve always found her to be intelligent, funny, well-educated, and articulate. And, she’s fierce! Whatever causes she embraces, she puts her whole heart and soul into them.
In her latest book, Kym provides a general overview of poetry and her vision for the future of poetry as an art form, a therapeutic tool, and an educational medium. She views poetry as a living, breathing thing that can transform the poet, the community, the country, and even the world. Poetry should be as rich, colorful, and diverse as life itself.
Her book is almost a textbook on creating poetry and would be a useful tool in the classroom. She introduces the concept of ArchiPoetry, which employs architectural ideas to design and perfect poetic creations. As she writes: “By combining the use of language, imagery, metaphors, and specific patterns, the design elements in ArchiPoetry have different disciplines and poetic variations.”
While journaling has been an accepted therapeutic tool for a while in mental health, Kym developed the concept of TheraPoetry, a process through which people can find emotional relief by expressing themselves with poetry. Kym speaks from experience. After the death of her mother, it was poetry – and writing poetry – which helped her through the grieving process.
Illiteracy is an issue about which Kym is very passionate; and she wants to use poetry as a medium to teach our children how to read and improve their reading comprehension skills. We all remember rhymes that we learned as children. Those rhymes stick in our heads as rhythmical pieces of our childhood, bring back fond memories, and encourage us to pass them on to the next generation.
Poetry is creativity, mental gymnastics, lyrical composition, and inner fantasy. Poetry is emotional release, mental growth, and spiritual expression. This is why Kym championed the cause of poetry in 2014 when she persuaded mayors all across North Carolina to submit proclamations officially recognizing April as National Poetry Month. Kym also endorses and supports the Academy of American Poets as a valuable resource for educators and poets everywhere. As she says, “Poetry is a revival and reminder of our aspirations, possibilities, and achievements for all people.”
Finally, I close with Kym’s own summation of poetry:
    “Poetry paints emotion
    art is imagination and passion
    poetry inspires art
expressionism through creativity is art and poetry
    -transformation-
poetry and art is creativity through expressionism
    art inspires poetry
    passion and imagination is art
    emotion paints poetry.”

I have known Kym for over ten years, and she has been a true friend and inspiration to me. It is because of her encouragement that I continue to write poetry and have a poetry blog on Word Press.

Her enthusiasm for poetry and encouraging other to enjoy the beauty of the written word is contagious as you will see in her book. It is full of simulating ideas and ways to express poetry both individually and in a classroom setting. This book is a great resource for teachers and for individuals who want to learn more about what it means when she says, "We are Poetry".

Kym's book shows us how poetry is all around us and in us as well. We truly are poetry, and its expression can change our world for the better as we share and dialogue together. She shows how we must never underestimate the power of the written word.

You will not be disappointed if you take time to check out this great creative book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Timely Aesthetically Pleasing Idea: We Are Poetry
Reviewed in Japan on May 29, 2023
Firstly, this is not a poetry collection but, as you must have gathered from the title: We
Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn't Learn in a Textbook by Kym Moore is a book about poetry
made up of real lessons the Author learned about poetry. It's a book packed with a
retelling of experiences lived and wisdom gained. And we, the readers, are invited to
listen and share a spark to continue the conversation about poetry.

Secondly, I'm merely 65% done with the book, and my heart is imploding with a desire
to tell you about it. I will finish it before I know it, but even at 65%, I have an excellent
    idea about this book.

I purchased the digital copy early in the year and read it on and off, struggling with the
print size on my phone. Not fair.

And all my attempts at having it read to me (iPhone function I adore) were in vain. But
some miracle happened of late, and I breezed through so many chapters. But let me
warn you: the beauty of this book is in chewing the words slowly. It's like a slow,
soul-cooked meal that demands introspection. Perhaps while sipping tea.

"We are simply a constellation of bodies swirling in a giant golden teacup
of human magic." — Author Kym.

Throughout the book, you will discover the many beautiful ways this Author's mind is a
well of inspiration in the ways she pairs aesthetically pleasing ideas into marriage:
between science and poetry, tea and poetry, an empty box and poetry, innovation and
poetry, between you and me and poetry, and so on and so on. Golly, this is a refreshing
way to root for, understand, and let poetry embrace the "whole" world. Because,
    indeed, we are poetry!

As you read, your eyebrows will get a good workout, as will your heart: in amazement
and disbelief. So be ready for this. Mine got a good workout with one story I will relate
as concisely as possible. I must tell you about this episode Author Kym Moore
encountered in the first year she was selected as one of the World Book Night
    volunteers for the U.S.

"The concept behind World Book Night (held annually on April 23) was to give away
free, special-edition copies of books written by well-known authors to people who were
not avid readers. The goal was to encourage and motivate these recipients to read
more. During my first year as a World Book Night volunteer, I chose to give away "I
Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" by my favorite poet Maya Angelou. I offered my free
copies (20 books) to an organization I thought would take advantage of this gift and
opportunity. The response I received was not quite what I expected, especially since,
believe it or not, this organization's mission is to combat adult illiteracy."

That organization's program director declined the donation due to the book's reading
    level!

"Her "adult" clients were reading on a 5th-grade level, and my book was on an 8th-grade reading level."

A top administrator over the county's literacy program unapologetically placed learning
    limitations on her clients!

"a question came to my mind: "How do you know you are oppressed if you do not
realize you are because others make you believe that you aren't?/

"to me, it is no more than mental imprisonment that physically impairs them. Could this
be a facet of institutionalized pluralistic ignorance I read about...?/

"How can we continue to allow biased influences and persuasiveness to breach the line
of ethics and form a territory of manipulation and deception? I hope the clients served
by this organization, and others like it, are more determined to go further than the
reading cap this agency has placed on them."

Please read more stories like this in the book. Your heart will thank you, and you'll
come to see the situation of illiteracy with new insight.

This book, We Are Poetry: Lessons I Didn't Learn in a Textbook by Kym Moore, is a
valuable reference to pursue informed conversations around literacy and poetry. It
will give you insight into ways to be proactive for a world that reads. It will work as a
tool to teach and enlighten us all in the fight against illiteracy, functional illiteracy,
    aliteracy, and disparity.

Poetry is dynamic, alive, and thriving.

Poetry, just like music, helps us try to make sense of things that seem futile and
    incomplete.

I raise my tea cup to this Author/Poet/beautiful ambassador of poetry, and by around
65% of the book, your heart will be well content too. Five stars from a satisfied
    reader in Japan.
