Vinyl LP pressing. For his second album as Son Lux, New York's Ryan Lott did a very un-Son Lux thing. He recorded We Are Rising in a month-the shortest month of the year, actually-while NPR tracked his every move. Quite different from the making of his lauded 2008 debut, At War With Walls and Mazes, which he slowly built in complete privacy over nearly three years, but he didn't plan it that way. He simply awoke one late January morning to find a message from All Songs Considered titled, "You busy?" The annual RPM Challenge, an international open call to create an album in 28 days, had been issued and Lott had been tapped. How could he say no?
Top Customer Reviews
"We are Rising" was conceived and recorded in February 2011 as part of the 'RPM Challenge' with the creative process encouraged and documented by NPR's All Songs Considered. It is remarkable that such a short burst of creativity and hard work could lead to this great album. As Son Lux states in his All Songs Considered interview "honestly, this record was more like improvisation. I mean it's definitely composing. But it's the closest I've come to improvising in the studio, which was fun."
I'd recommend this album to fans of Sufjan Stevens (specifically Stevens's newer stuff) and Radiohead, as well as fans of movie soundtracks, simply because of the orchestral sound to many of Son Lux's songs.
This album is well worth your money!
