I heard the first single, "Someday," on Sacramento radio months ago and liked it, but thought that was probably the best Flipsyde could come up with. I was dead wrong. There are at least a half-dozen or more tracks here that are as strong or stronger.
I love Flipsyde's socio-political leanings. In a time when rap and hip-hop seem more about the bling and little about global interaction or social debate, Flipsyde breaks the mold in songs like "U.S. History" and "Happy Birthday." And there is some pretty fine musicianship here, too, and the production is incredible.
Like a great wine that opens up with each sip, this record shares something new with each listen. For good or bad, I even hear elements of U2 and N'sync.
The CD has been in my car deck for the past two weeks, and I just can't seem to take it out. Buy it. Every song is worth at least 99 cents.
What I heard was one of the most interesting and captivating fusions I've heard in a long time. It's hard to pinpoint all of the influences to be heard on this CD, but one thing is for sure -- it KICKS.
The lyrics are intelligent and masterfully delivered, the guitar work is outstanding, and every song is catchy and infectious. It runs the spectrum from hardcore, politically charged rap to uplifting and thought-provoking songs about family, personal accountability, and the state of the world we live in today. In contrast to a lot of music today, this entire CD has a purpose and will definitely draw you in with its many important messages.
Highly recommended for people who like rap, rock, or just generally great music that transcends genre.
Flipsyde had the opportunity to be the iTunes free download of the week sometime last summer, but unfortunatly I missed the chance to find them myself. Only later was I exposed to "Someday" at a friends and was blown away. When "We The People" was released, I was pumped but, honestly, skeptical they could put forth an album as good as "Someday."
I was wrong.
The simple truth is this is by far the catchiest album I've listened to in years. Wether the song is about life, love, history, or (yes) even their mothers, Flipsyde brings their message home in such a unique style it defies words. What truly makes them unique is the latin influence in the guitar, it reminds me of some of my favorite flaminco. Combined with the strong beats by DJ D-Sharp, songs such as "Time" and "Spun" will stay in your head for a while.
My only issue with this disk is the song "US History". Its almost boring for an educated person to listen too, and while it starts strong, the more I listen to it, it feels corny in a sense.
It is a shame that their strongest song in my opinion "Happy Birthday" failed to make the album. I strongly suggest seeking it out on iTunes or some other music service.
With the upcoming press that is sure to surround this Oakland group after their exposure in the 2006 Winter Olympics and on the Jay Leno show, the rest of America will suddenly discover there are alternatives to the current cookie cutter pop.
I'm a fan for life.
