Wearing the Cape is really the best superhero novel out there - and if there is any justice in the world we'll see a movie of it someday. It starts off with a young woman who gains superpowers, and her journey into the world of capes (read: Superheroes) and what they face on a day to day basis. The story is so incredibly well grounded and realistic, with a world that is just slightly canted to the side of our own, that it is immersive and easy to imagine. Astra and the other characters are well-rounded, three-dimensional beings who have feelings, motivations, and make mistakes like normal people - and sometimes those mistakes have bitter costs.
This book also includes some new editing and graphics - as well as some fantastic art - so it's worth getting even if you already own the first book. Astra's journey begins here, and you can go along with her... and it's one you will not regret.
Hope is a bright, ambitious, high school grad ready to take the world or at least Chicago, by storm. Then it all comes crashing down. Literally. She joins the world of the Capes, and from there it only gets stranger, and better.
Hope and I go way back, pretty much to the beginning. I’ve read enough versions of this to know how the TA feels. But this one is the best.
