"Wow. Philippa Ballantine has awakened a rare legend in the vibrant world of New Zealand."
- My World...in Words and Pages

"It's clear that Pip, born and raised a Wellingtonian, has never lost her love for this land, even when writing about it from halfway around the world in the United States. Weather Child is a love story to New Zealand, and I was very happy to be a voyeur at the window as these two lovers communed."
- Lori Holuta

Years in the making, this book was first published back in 2009 and the author has republished it with a brand new cover and editing.

First off, I really enjoyed the book, the alternative history in New Zealand and the idea of the Awakened. Philippa Ballantine is a highly talented and popular author. When I started reading this I was excited with the idea of reading a book set in New Zealand having read a handful of books involving the relationships between Māori and the European settlers.

This was another book about relationships in the population of New Zealanders, the first generation (First-Born), the native population (Māori) and others, Seraphim, but what makes this different is this is a magical fantasy instead of a historical fiction. And like her other books, Ms. Ballantine develops a very believable world with rich characters you care deeply about.

Based in post-WW1 New Zealand the book starts off with what appears to be a serial killer, but what it turns out to be is something all together different. In Ballentine's New Zealand, each child, mainly first-born,, has a chance of becoming Awakened; bonded with a Seraphim. It is a bond formed out of pain & trauma. When one becomes an Awakened one also must learn to not only live with a constant companion but also not lose themselves in the magic which comes with their Seraphim, doing so will be risking madness.

The typical conventions and story devices are here for telling a tale of good and bad, of a society struggling to rebuild after the war, as is necessary for a post war historical, but with the added fantasy and magical tropes mired in it we get a new angle to enjoy the stories being told.

I discovered Pip Ballantine’s writing via The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, a rollicking Steampunk adventure series co-written with her husband, Tee Morris. When I enjoy a writer’s style, I’m willing to take little leaps of faith with them into territory I would normally pass by. I’ll admit honestly that it’s been a while since I read a fantasy novel. I’m very happy that Weather Child was the novel to bring the magic back into my life.

Billed as “a new historical fantasy about two lovers separated by magic and circumstance”, Weather Child is, to my mind, all that and a bag of chips. This historical fiction takes us on a sweeping journey that starts in the trenches of World War I and carries us to Wellington, New Zealand, during the Great Depression. We’re taken on this ride by Jack, a soldier who gave his all in the war and was brutally rewarded for his service in one life-changing, explosive event, and by Faith, a farm girl who is more than what meets the eye.

Jack and Faith are caught up in unimaginable, horrific circumstances. How they find the strength to fight the unimaginable for themselves, their kin and their friends is the basis of a story that will ultimately blow you away. I know I said “I didn’t see that coming” more than once–and one of those times I said it rather loudly.

What the jacket cover won’t mention–but I will–is another set of lovers separated by circumstance and deeply entwined in this story. Their names are Pip Ballantine and New Zealand. Weather Child bounces us between urban life in Wellington and the wild, beautiful countryside beyond the city limits. It’s clear that Pip, born and raised a Wellingtonian, has never lost her love for this land, even when writing about it from halfway around the world in the United States.

I have been waiting for this book since I first heard it as a podcast! The world Philippa has created, the magic system, and the characters are places and people I want to visit again and again. I hope there will be more coming in this universe!

Not only does New Zealands residents have to worry about fighting the war over seas for England but also the war in their own lands - the loss of their own protectors, the seraphim and their hosts. Three people are drawn together when what appears as a serial killer first with the many Awakened soldiers that are caught off guard in their home land, thrilled to be home, then takes children, who are first children and could host seraph. Faith goes in search of her missing cousin. Lily has lost her mother, and the name of her seraph before completely awakening. Jack, home from the war where his seraph awakened, struggles with the curse he lives with and the isolation he feels from the loss of his loved ones. All three are drawn together over years as they are drawn for personal reasons to the troubles and murders.

Wow. Philippa Ballantine has awakened a rarely heard legend in the vibrant world of New Zealand. Drawing to the forefront a seraphim and magic, in first generations born into the land, that many Urban Fantasy fans will fall for. A serial killer is on the lose and seraphim and their hosts are not safe. Fresh and traces of old blended together for our enjoyment.

Seraphim are the magic in the oldest child of a New Zealand child. They always want to please their hosts so the temptation of the power they offer is easily accessed, and can be dangerous with feeling the power they have. Many feel the seraph are a curse as usually the hosts don't live to middle age, let alone old. The constant connection driving the host mad. Yet there are many who enjoy having the friend to never feel alone. The seraph awakened by severe pain and trauma to the host.

In the Prelude we meet Jack, three years prior to the story starting, while in the war in Turkey.
