Good introduction to web technology, good design advice, but dated
on January 2, 2012
I am a beginner / intermediate web developer and am reading much of this book for a web development class in early 2012. The fact that the professor is still using this book speaks to its quality and applicability, despite the fact that the edition we are using was written in 2006.
The book is more than a simple reference. One of its major strengths is that it also offers sound design advice throughout.
Because of the age of the book, there are many references to idiosyncrasies of old browser versions and no mention of newer technologies (e.g. Microsoft Silverlight). However, it's coverage of other core topics were valuable enough for my teacher to still use it and for me to give it a four star rating. If O'Reilly updates this book, I expect the next version to be five stars.
