I didn't have the time or inclination to go out and buy another thermometer so I figured it was worth trying to change the battery, The battery is accessible by twisting the front part of the housing (the part with the buttons and LCD) counterclockwise in relation to the back.
As it turned out, the battery was fine but the contacts must have had a little oxidation that prevented the front part from communicating with the sensor. After gently cleaning the contacts with a soft piece of fabric, It works fine now.
Glancing at other reviews I noticed a lot of people complaining that their thermometer display started malfunctioning and sometimes displayed LL. They go on to say that they are disappointed and have to buy a new thermometer. Why? Like any other battery operated device you eventually have to replace the battery! It is a very simple task and inexpensive. The battery type is LR44 and after turning the face of the thermometer counter-clockwise you slip out the old battery and slip in the new one. The batteries are sold here on Amazon, I priced them at 2 for $1.99. A lot cheaper than a new thermometer.
I have included a photo from the user manual to illustrate opening the battery compartment and it also states the battery type as already mentioned here.
While I don't need a meat thermometer often enough to warrant spending a hundred bucks on a ThermoWorks Thermapen, I did decide to try again and go with the newest top pick by The Sweethome: A Thermopop, also from ThermoWorks. It's a lot less expensive, better quality, and the shipping was reasonable direct from the maker. The basic stick design is similar to this Weber, but it sports a 2-year warranty from people who seem to give a (BBQ) spit. With my luck, they'll start selling on Amazon right after I finish writing this sentence (though there's a warning that "Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Sears and their sellers are NOT Authorized Dealers" on their website right now).
Ultimately, I would not recommend the Weber 6492, unless you really want to spend the least amount of money possible, can take advantage of quick/free Prime shipping, and are prepared to maintain the thing constantly.
Very simple to use even for the novice cook. Just remove it from the protective sleeve, turn on and insert into the meat. You'll get an accurate reading within just a second or two. Run a quick Google search for the internal temperature of whatever it is you are cooking and you'll have all the information you need.
In a buy it or forget it rating scale, this is definitely a buy it!
Works just fine as long as you don't get sidetracked and shove your turkey back in the oven without removing it. 20 minutes in a convection oven set at 325 and I caught the thermometer right before the melted top dropped off into the turkey drippings. Needless to say, it's not heat resistant! :) Other than that, I had no problems with it quickly and accurately giving me a temp reading. (tested it with boiling water to start) the swivel head is nice, the only thing with that is that it's floppy. I wasn't expecting that. I expected that maybe it would ratchet up and down, but it basically just flops over and you lift it to read it. That's why it gets 4 stars, it would be nice if you could adjust it to a certain degree and leave it there. But, what do I want for 10 bucks? I'd buy it again, because that's what I just did - bought it again. One Click...it'll be here on Friday.
