Live and learn, have learned not to scrape porcelain enameled grates with a wire brush or metal scraper, easiest way to keep them looking new is to toss them in the dishwasher after every use, perhaps why they designed two of these sitting side by side rather than one large grate. Do that and you may not be buying replacement grates in the first place.
These grates are fairly thin stamped steel that has a thin covering of porcelain to prevent rust. However, my experience is that they will eventually rust anyway and require replacement. I also purchased Weber stainless steel flavorizor bars thinking that they wouldn't rust but two years later and they are beginning to rust. I guess they don't make this stuff to last and Weber makes money on replacement parts.
It's been a little over 2 years since I bought these grates and my experience has been underwhelming. The grates don't perform nearly as well as the originals (as mentioned before), but now after only 2 years, the grates are actually starting to warp and droop in the center of the grill (like if someone had placed something heavy instead of just cooking burgers and steaks). I'm dropping my review by one star (to two stars) for the lack of durability and lack of quality materials.
It fit PERFECTLY and was part of a "GRILL-REBUILDING PROJECT", I'd been
putting-off for the past 2 years.
I should of bought this sooner!
