I bought this grate for stovetop use. It fits nicely atop my stove burner. I use it for grilling veggies that don't drip like eggplant and zucchini. I love grilled veggies but if I don't have meat to grill at the same time, then I don't feel it's worth firing up the gas grill outside. It takes awhile for the grate to heat up but once it's hot, the veggies cook up pretty quick.

Purchased the Weber BBQ System Sear Grate after ordering, but before receiving, the BBQ System Stainless Steel grates for my Genesis E-310. I was replacing the porcelain cast iron cooking grates that came with my Genesis, but lasted on 1.5 years before corroding and rusting out. I wanted to change to stainless steel for durability, but liked the heat and cooking of cast iron. When I saw the Gourmet BBQ System it seemed like the possibility of having the best of both worlds.

Both the stainless steel primary grates and this cast iron sear grate are excellent so far. While I've only used them a few times. the sear grate works exactly as I had hoped - perfectly searing my meats with great grill marks, and honestly, I cook steaks on the sear grate completely. Only other meats do I first sear, then move to another area of the grill onto the stainless steel surface.

I did take a little extra step and season the cast iron sear grate in the oven for an hour before first use, and will probably continue to at least oil my meats before grilling, and perhaps add some oil to the sear grate direction (after cooking) at times to try and help fight off any moisture and maximize its longevity.

I love the idea of Weber's Gourmet BBQ System, the high-quality stainless steel main grates, this cast iron sear grate, and I hope to try a couple of the other inserts as well.

Bravo Weber - job well done (again)!

Despite what the product description and previous review says, this thing is not about 15 inches. I put a tape measure to it, and it has a diameter of 11.75 inches. It's intended as one component of Weber's gourmet bbq system, fitting into a hole of a special grate for their 22.5 inch kettle grills, but I have it for my gas grill just sitting on top of the grates. It's large enough for two decent steaks or a few burgers, but I was hoping for a little more cooking surface. Otherwise, it's solid and a good shortcut to classic sear marks, especially when one person likes their steak more done than the other. This allows me to heat this thing up on one section of the grill, put both our steaks on to sear, and then move mine to a cooler section of the grill to avoid overcooking while the other stays in higher heat (I do turn my grill down after the full pre-heat, but leave the back higher than the front). May buy another so I can do this with guests. Plenty of room left on the grill.

when i make steaks i like to have a good hot solid sear on them and normal grates that come with the weber don't achieve them that well. the sear grate being so thick and made from cast iron made the surface really hot and puts beautiful grill lines on my streaks. i recommend this to anyone looking for that extra edge in grilling steaks.

TIP: i know you're supposed to use this with the girl grate with the circular cut out but i just slap this right on top of my normal grate and it works all the same. happy grilling!

I'd prefer straight cast iron without a porcelain finish. The porcelain is apparently to prevent sticking and ease cleanup but any cast iron user knows how to do that. Tt is what it is and it does a fine job on steaks. Crank up the temp to 550 degrees, sear the steak 3-4 min on each side and I get a nicely seared rare to medium rare steak every time. An instant read thermometer helps to lock it in to the right doneness.

I don't know if the steak cooks any different or better than the standard grate so maybe I'm just reviewing the grill marks it leaves on the steak. I know cast iron is supposed to be able to retain heat better than many other materials but inside a kettle with the cover closed I'm not sure how much value heat retention adds. Seems more important for cooking something requiring a slow, long cook than a quick sear. I could be wrong. It is just the way I like to cook.

So I really like the versatility of the hinged cooking grate (8835) but this sear grate seems less useful. If you have a good selection of cast iron in your kitchen then I think you'll find other uses for the 8835 and can save a few bucks on this.

I think this is a good idea for those that only grill for one or two people, but I found that using it in the center of the grill, greatly limits the surrounding indirect cooking area, if you're cooking anything other than small amounts. So after the first couple of uses, I went back to piling my coals against one side, left the regular center grate in, and simply put the sear grate over on the side with my hot coals. This still gives me the nice sear marks I'm looking for, but greatly increases the indirect surface I want for indirect cooking after the sear. I can also easily remove the sear grate when done searing to give me back all of my indirect cooking surface if I need it. So it does what I need, using a little Yankee Ingenuity.
