Webroot is a great product. Ive used it previously on my PCs and since migrating to a MacBook last year I've had very little use for AV software. What caught my eye with this product was all the additional features. While i have almost zero concern for potential viruses I felt it would be worthwhile to have an all-in-one product for password protection, file syncing, browser history/file erasure instead of using multiple applications as i do now. Not to mention that even though viruses, with few exceptions, are unheard of on the Mac OS, 3rd party software exploits are not so the browser extension and AV protection was icing on the cake. Well, come to find out, the Mac version offers none of these features with the exception of the AV scanning and Safari extension.

I first wrote it off as poor consumer research thinking i must have missed something glaring. Nope. I re-read the product description on Amazon. Nothing. Looked at their website..had to be there right? Nope. Looked at the 3(4th pending) 1 star reviews....ah-ha! There it is. Rob left a 1 start review on 10/09/12 for the exact same thing and a Webroot representative even responded. Greg from Webroot replied

"I have escalated this issue internally for the need to clarify the features of our products and we will be making this more clear on our website moving forward."

The "more clear" refers to the following disclaimer that was then listed and is still listed:

"Features and functions are not available on all operating systems and may vary depending on operating system."

Did i see this? I sure did and didn't give it a second thought.

Hey Shawn,

This is Mike and I recently took over for Greg. I sincerely apologize that you had this experience with our Mac product. I notified the team and we all agreed that this language should have been handled better.

As a result of your great feedback, we are now making improvements to our Mac product and rolling out additional features in our next build (coming later this month). We're also now updating all wording on the website and box to make it extremely clear where the differences lie in features between our PC and Mac versions. It was never our intent to be misleading and I'm sorry on behalf of the entire company that the vague messaging created such a negative experience for you.

If there's anything else I can do to personally remedy this situation further, please just let me know. In the meantime, thanks for helping us make this better for future customers! :)

I've used Norton anti-virus products for years and currently use Norton 360 2013 Premier. See, Norton 360 2013 Premier - 1 User / 3 PC. Norton 360 2013 Premier is, imho, the best of the Norton products. I also use Webroot Secure Anywhere Internet Security Complete 2013, (see, Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Complete 2013 - 5 Devices), a relatively new product. Both products are excellent, but differ in several important respects. I have two Windows PCs, one running Windows XP Professional and the other running Windows 7. I have run both programs on both machines.

Footprint: Norton occupies about 123 mb of space on my drive, whereas Webroot occupies about .70 mb. Webroot's footprint is incredibly small; its entire program could probably fit on a floppy disk. However, Norton's 123 mb of space is insignificant on most newer machines, where hard drives often exceed one terabyte capacity.

Response Time: My primary issue with Norton is the fact that it slows the response time of certain functions, such as booting up, shutting down, loading desktop icons, opening word doc files, opening pdf files, and opening websites. Webroot does not slow my machine's response time as much as Norton.

Password Management Feature: Both Norton and Webroot offer a password management feature.

I have used Webroot for 3 years now. I have used others programs in the past and they seem to bog down the computer. Ever since switching to Webroot I have never had any weird problems with windows such as spyware that slows browsing or any other problems. I figure if we have never had a problem what so ever its worth the money to keep our laptops that way! We do alot of online purchases and bill paying with no worries. The laptop always runs quick and I couldn't be happier.

I tried Webroot as it seemed to have a novel detection method and was very well reviewed. I wish I hadn't tried it.

For starters, Webroot stores its configuration in the cloud. This should have been a feature, a bonus. It turned out to be extremely frustrating. Webroot frequently doesn't store configuration changes to the web. It doesn't complain, it doesn't malfunction. But days, or even weeks later (depending on your habits) when you restart your computer it will revert configuration changes. This, for me, was very hard to troubleshoot as I don't restart my computers very often.

The browser plugin and mobile functionality are both nearly useless. I tried extremely hard to give Webroot a chance on this front. Webroot includes two features, a password manager and a webform filler intended to make browsing more secure. The mobile security, sadly, was nothing more than an app and a browser designed to provide access to these services on your mobile device. I was expecting an actual virus scan; something that would tell me if I've installed malicious software on my jailbroken iPhone. The browser plugin provides those services on your desktop, but even if you elect not to use them it continually harasses you to add passwords to Webroot.

As for the password manager, I've used KeePass for five or so years and was reluctant to give it up. I was also trying to buy into Webroot's services and so tried importing my KeePass database into Webroot. It seems the developers at Webroot didn't understand exactly how much one could rely on an app like KeePass. I have more than 250 entries in KeePass, Webroot's import utility continually choked on just the size of the database I was attempting to import. Once I finally got the arcane and backward import process to work at all...

Webroot's reviews are legitimate and represent our customers and their opinion about our product. I do apologize that there is not a more robust app for Mac products, this is a limitation of the Apple and iTunes environment which we are constantly working to add features to. Your configuration changes should be saved and this issue could be caused because your settings are set to "Centrally Managed" on your online account. You can change this setting by clicking on the machine in question within your online account and changing the setting to "User Configuration".

I have seen the permanently erase functionality conflict on one occasion and one of our escalation engineers was able to resolve it on our community by reviewing WSA Logs submitted by the user (link below).

Our customer support leads the security industry and is not outsourced. The support ticket system is the best way to contact support and these tickets are answered by technicians 7 days a week. Again, I would like to apologize for your negative experience, please send me an email at communitysupport@webroot.com if there is anything I can do to improve your experience.
