I have used a beta version of this book with dozens of remedial students and am glad to finally have a hard copy in a nice book format. Most of my remedial students have been able to read a grade level or two above their current grade level after working through Noah Webster's Speller and working with some nonsense words with my free online phonics concentration game. I had two minority students from inner city LA schools who had also formerly been homeless. They were reading the 12th grade passages with ease after 6 weeks of weekly tutoring with nonsense words and this Speller. I also had several inner city minority students from North Little Rock who were reading 2 to 4 grades about their grade level after their work with Webster's speller.
My volunteers with 40L and students who have used the methods in this book have been amazed with the power of a book over 100 years old. Don Potter's re-typed version is a pleasure to use, much better than the scanned copies I have used in the past.
I have been a volunteer literacy tutor since 1994, this is the most powerful remedial resource you will find. Add in a few nonsense words to counteract sight word guessing habits and you can teach anyone to read anything! Don Potter has ideas and resources on how to use this book on his website, his Spelling Book page. I have additional ideas on The Phonics Page, the page titled Webster's Way.
