Product Description

How many years are you married?

We make our 9th anniversary pottery desk roses by hand using polymer clay, wrapping the stem with floral wire and adding artificial leaves. We then glue them into pebbles set in a small terra cotta pot. Standing about 7 inches tall, this is a one piece item (pebbles glued in) meant to be "gender neutral" as this is a small floral gift that can be proudly displayed on a man's desk as well as a woman's desk.

I'm Jeff, the creator of JustPaperRoses. In 1994 my hobby of Origami had me creating incredible Origami Orchids (I no longer create them for sale) and I started a greeting card business with a heart shaped Origami fold out Valentine's Day card. By the year 2000 the business had morphed to "just" paper roses with a paper rose modeled after a "bar trick" cocktail napkin rose, twirled around one's fingers, but I used my fine Origami paper to create an "upscale" cocktal napkin rose. I named the company JustPaperRoses thinking I'd service only the market for 1st "paper" Anniversary gifts.

By 2003 I knew I was creating a marketing "sin". Customers (mostly husbands) told me how much their wives LOVED their gift of JustPaperRoses, and therefore I had a satisfied customer, knew exactly when his 2nd "cotton" Anniversary was, and I had his email address, but I was doing nothing for him.

So my wife and I ordered real cotton stems from a farm, but they were dirty and nasty - couldn't sell them to customers, so I created artificial JustCottonRoses by simply gluing cotton balls in the center of a fine artificial flowers. In April of 2003 I put them on our website and thought if I sold 5 orders for the month I'd be happy. Well? We sold 25 orders, so the rest of the year was spent figuring out roses through year 10 and then by the end of 2005 I had filled in through year 20, 25 & 50.

The years in order of the top view pics above are:
1) Paper (handmade mulberry paper)
2) Cotton (cotton balls glued into the center of an artificial rose)
3) Leather (twirled strips of leather)
4) Fruit (artificial apple glued into the center of an artificial rose)
5) Wood (hand carved and painted wood rose)
6) Candy (folded strips of old fashioned candy buttons)
7) Wool (twirled strips of wool felt)
8) Bronze (ball of bronze wool glued into the center of an artificial rose)
9) Pottery (polymer clay rose)
10) Aluminum (2 squares of aluminum hand folded)
11) Steel (ball of steel wool glued into the center of an artificial rose)
12) Silk (this one is easy - a high quality artificial rose)
13) Lace (twirled strips of lace ribbon)
14) Ivory (NOT ivory - tagua nut rose also called fake ivory)
15) Crystal (crystal chandelier drops made into a difficult to photograph rose)
16) Wax (rose candles)
17) Shell (shell roses)
18) Feather (goose feather roses)
19) Chili-Pepper (artficial chili pepper atop floral stem)
20) Porcelain (fragile porcelain rose buds)
25) Silver (twirled strips of silver ribbon - NOT real silver)
50) Gold (twirled strips of gold ribbon - NOT real gold)

In the 1920's Emily Post published a small book on etiquette where she named seven materials for anniversaries: 1-paper, 5-wood, 10-aluminum, 15-crystal, 20-porcelain, 25-silver, and 50-gold. Where the rest of the materials that fill traditional anniversary tables have come from, nobody really knows.

For a couple the Anniversary can be an "uh-oh", I have to figure out ANOTHER gift occasion? You've exchanged birthday, Valentine's, holiday and other gifts. But here comes the Anniversary gifts, and it's gotta be good!

Happy 9th "pottery" Anniversary!
